I think what we are trying to say pal is if you want to target foxes @ 300 yards plus then a .223 is not ideal, it will do it, for sure, but just not as well as a .22-250, .220 swift, .243 ect, all of these shoot flatter and with more punch at extended range, but dont worry mate the majority of your foxes will most likely be around 70-150 yards.

The Hornet is a brilliant little round, but here's the fly in the ointment, factory ammo is expensive, and with the exception of Hornady, 35grain vmax, it is pretty crap, and loaded to low pressures a

Lol ultimate fox dropper as I said for informal practice then privi is good enough would I shoot fox with it we'll if it grouped well and some guns group very well with it then why not but if you want

CF isn't really the best choice for target practice TBH unless you're well healed.   Banging off 50 rounds will cost you around £55-60 with a .223. Quite an expensive hour out!   Also remember, CF

If where talking informal practice then privi is plenty good enough and at £50 per 100 for hornet, .222 or .223 it aint going to break the bank

I personally don't like the cheep privi round tne name sais it all privi shite

I use the remington 50gr accutip boat tail

What a round ultimate fox dropper out to 300

Plus there one of the cheapist c/f"s. To re-load

---////////223 ant gunner cut it? @300 yards that one of the most stupidest statements I herd my mate can pole ax rabbits within a 500 yards with a 75grain amax to buck the wind ,,I can shoot comfortabl out 350/380 a fox ant gunner be no more dead from a 3oo yard 223 shot than 22-250! 340 yard shot It's just simplly learning the tragectory ,, mine drops about 5"@300yards doing 3450fps with a 55g Edited by Cushty mush

Small differences between .223 and 5.56 and I think a lot of people are speaking about they're preferences and that there are better calibres I'm sure and as I was a marksman with the 5.56mm rifle at ranges up to 400m's there is always a difference between shooting targets and live quarry...that said even a .22lr can penetrate at 400m's with the large amount of drop given over that range (12ft or something?) Not suggesting the use of it but I believe the .223 to fully capable out to distances longer than described permitting weather conditions and circumstances.

It all comes down to two things,

Your own confidence & ability with the gun and being able to clearly see what it is you're shooting at.

Confidence/ability will come with practice, the same as anything else. Being able to clearly see where you're aiming at 300+ yards at night on the lamp is definitely easier said than done. You need a good scope that works well both day and night, as well as confidence you can put the bullet on target at extended range.

The round you're using, when you get into the realms of .222 onwards is fairly immaterial.

Absolutely guys practice makes perfect but you will know this through extensive practice over varying ranges what you and the calibre are capable of...many will so no and many will say yes no matter what question it is with anything and that's what we're all on here for..helping each other and sharing information and advice.

Blahh Blahh Blahh try to make it readable next time

I own a .223 I know what it can do. I have at one time or another had.17.222,.223, 22-250,6ppc, 243 ,25 06,.308, 300 ultra mag and can categorically say that the .223 is not the ultimate foxdropper sure it's capable but take it out on a howling night and see how we fare bear in mind for the last 24 years I have shot fox as one of the major parts of my employment I don't get the luxury of choosing the perfect conditions when I go out as you lads that play at it do.

p.s you will notice I don't say which I think makes the ultimate fox gun and that's for the simple fact that it does not exist you use the right gun for the right circumstance

Don't listen to Dan folks, he doesn't shoot foxes in numbers, he's only done about 40 or so in the past couple weeks. And it fucks him right up if you forget you left the mag wound down on his scope, quite frankly he's a rank amateur....
