matlee 1
Hi guys , been out target shooting with my hmr today and the shells were splitting ? What causes this ? And can it do any damage to the bore ? Because it was only one box of ammo that did it , but iv still got 2 more boxes of the stuff ! Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
Yeah, this is due to the fact that they form the body of the case, fill the rim with priming compound and then form the neck, as they can't anneal the case because of the priming compound, the neck becomes work hardened and splits when fired, I have had a few split before firing, so I haven't used them, but it doesn't seem to affect accuracy, there are a couple of topics in the forum here discussing this..... 1 Quote Link to post
matlee 1
Do they damage the gun in anyway ? Is it worth complaining about them to the gyn dealer where I bought them from because there the first ammo that I used in my new gun . Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
no not at all, the brass is far softer than the steel of the barrel. its not worth complaining, its just a quirk if the round until CCI or whoever find a different way to make the cases, all of the brands do it AFAIK, mine are Federal Premium V-Shok and they do it too., still just as deadly on the bunnies 1 Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
This is a very common problem, perhaps it should be pinned!Just a few of mine, and it effects ALL makes! From Bob Palmer at Hornady, Published in Shooting UK 2007"CCI makes the cases for all the .17 HMR ammo and loads it for the different companies. When they make the cases they draw the case out to a .22mag case that has a straight wall. Then the priming compound is put in the rim of the case. The case is spun to put the primer evenly in the rim. After the priming is complete the case mouth is reduced to the .17 calibre to hold the bullet. The reduction process, however, puts stress on the neck of the case. They obviously cannot anneal the neck of the case to relieve the stress because of the compound in the rim, so from time to time you will get a case that cracks. Some batches may produce more splits than others. The chamber pressure on .17 ammo is so low that it does not hurt the chamber on the rifle. They have tried to anneal the cases more before it's formed to .17, but this did not eliminate the cracks altogether. If the cracks were minor I would continue to use the ammo. The cracks do not affect the accuracy of the round and the brass is not reloadable". From Bob Whilst the first sentence is not now entirely accurate the HMR problem/cases cracks issue is still unchanged, please note this goes back to 2007, the problems were well known even before this! Savage Steve 15
I had this problem as well. I complained direct to the manufacturer who then got Dereck Edgar from Edgar bros to contact me. I was sent a new box of 500 and sent what was left of the old ones back (about 140) Not had any probs at all with new box. Apparently they are all manufactured by CCi. Steve. Quote Link to post
