dogmad riley 1,347
Hi all I am asking this question due to my lurcher having damaged his shoulder / top of the leg. While out on a routine walk. Had him to the vets and they said it just looks like he has twisted and pulled a muscle. Well a week and a half later he is still limping. Had him out walking but only on the lead and not great a distance. My question is have you ever had any similar experience and did the lurcher run to its full potential again? Thanks Quote Link to post
weasle 1,119
No expert but just muscles dog shouldn't be lame for that long Quote Link to post
the big chief 3,099
Try a gh vet mate go to ya local track always one there Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
I'd say go to a greyhound vet as most ordinary vets haven't a clue on running dogs, failing that go to a bone man, chances are its just heavy internal bruising and that takes time more than anything, atb, WM 2 Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Seconded: only a good greyhound vet/bone man will be able to tell you what is wrong, and give you a programme to follow. Maybe more than a pulled muscle. Could be a tear, or there could be tendon or ligament damage as well which can take 3 months to heal. But just leaving it as it is may always leave the dog lame as soft tissue that is damaged can heal in the wrong way (muscle heals contracted or with scar tissue that prevents it from moving normally, for example). Good physio and or massage is as important as rest. 2 Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,347
Thanks for the replys. I didn't think a pulled muscle would last this long, he is getting better. But think il try a greyhound vet just to be sure. Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,347
Anyone had a dog injured like this and make a full recovery? Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
As we don't know exactly what the injury is, it is impossible to tell you anything sensible: only a greyhound vet can tell you this. 1 Quote Link to post

A trip to the greyhound vet on Monday hopefully should get a better picture of his injury Quote Link to post
BIGLURKS 874
Bones with meat on mate got too keep him thinking of something my dog ended up trying too chew his tail of on the end try and bring in the house if you can just too stop he's boredom but it all depends on the injury I was adviced too kennel mine for 6 weeks just cos of the injury he done Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
There are very few injuries that benefit by complete rest: and it can also cause muscles and other soft tissues to heal 'wrong'. Steady lead walking is nearly always recommended for most soft tissue injuries, but do see a greyhound vet or good back man and get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Just leaving a dog in a kennel is usually counter productive as the dog gets so stressed out, starts bouncing up and down and can sometimes make things a lot worse. 3 Quote Link to post
thefensarefarbutistillgo 2,482
My bitch recently pulled her monkey muscle in her shoulder and it was fairly swollen, took her to Meeks a few days later and he said complete kennel rest for 10 days then to be kept on the lead for 3 months to let it heal properly but during that 3 months can walk her as much and as far as I want Quote Link to post

dogmad riley 1,347
Going to get him looked at tomorrow as don't won't the dog out if action before he's learned his trade. He was injured at the start of last Season ( his 1st season ) for a few months which halted his progress and now this. Quote Link to post
