GIBB0 50
trenchfoot- I hope you don't prod many men on the internet... . pesky- I would say she will improve or I wouldn't have brought the bitch with a view of bringing her on I took a risk it might work out it might not. I have put some certain catches her way and some have been laughable honestly at one point I was in stiches shes a fruitcake at times.all I can do is put the work her way and hopefully she will step up her game. maybe I am painting out a bad picture of her that's not my intension I am sure she would suit some people down to the ground. she retrives live to hand. works cover well. works with gun. marks well. its not all bad. in my dogs I always tend to see the negatives and not the posatives. but at least I am honest... timmy k 591
A few years ago I owned a big rangy 3/4 bull greyhound he was very fast with stamina to spare and intelligent to, but he was overshadowed by my older dog ( a deerhound x) who was very good with the heart of a lion. The deerhound x died and I kept a pup out of the litter he sired before his demise. She surpassed the bull x before she was 2 with less speed, less stamina and a hell of a lot less intelligence why? Because she's got the same heart her sire had. Now the bull cross wasn't a bad dog he had a few flaws that I could live with but he didn't have the gutsy drive I like and would often pick and choose his runs, Infact reading through this I think he was probably better than the dogs in most people's kennels but why feed and house a dog when I've got a young up and coming doing better than him whilst just learning the ropes. Anyway we parted company and now my kennels are a happier place Quote Link to post
blackmaggie 3,376
how many can give a above average dog the graft/time to justify such a dog or breeding or are willing to admit there average handlers or it is them that cant match a dog expectations and not the other way round alot of the time peoples expectations out weight there own capabilities and theres a reason why good dogmen always have good dogs 3 Quote Link to post
teddog 59
Some one's average dog could be another mans rubbish;then another mans treasure.it all depends on your standards.not every lurcher performs well at each task.might be an excellent dog on lamped rabbits but poor at ferreting.then what.i expect 99% of lurchers are only average because what i've seen is all dogs catch roughly the same amount when i go out with different people. GIBB0 50
blackmaggie- its not that I think I am better than anyone else I know the standard of dog I am capable of producing and if this dog or any other dog for that matter wont make the standard It wont be because of the lack of trying on my behalf. there is only so much you can do with a dog before the balls in his court. I no a lad whos still plugging away with his dog he is giving her droppers at bloody 3 years old but he is happy to keep on trying.... in MY opinion there comes a time were you have done all you can to put the odds in your dogs favour but you cant go though all its working life giving the dog handouts. a lot of good dog men have good dogs but even they have a few that didn't cut it.... 1 Quote Link to post

shealy1 71
It depends on the owner. If they want an average dog, so be it. If they want a top class dog they will keep trying until they get it. BUT !! Many owners will NEVER have a good dog, because THEY are not good enough . Many a good dog has not reached its potential or has been ruined by a useless owner . the man talks sense It depends on the owner. If they want an average dog, so be it. shealy1 71
If ur out putting game in front of the dog once its fully matured and entered correctly and after a season or 2 the dog is running half hearted or failing to run on game then f**k that time for the offskies but in saying that ,that doesnt sum up an average lurcher to me that sums up a failure time to part ways Quote Link to post

stabba 10,745
You can lead a horse to water...but you can't make it drink. Some dogs start off on fire then gradually fade away while others start off slowly but improve with every outing and some are just downright shirkers Plug away until you think you've given the dog every chance to improve. then if you are not happy do what you need to do. I certainly wouldn't kennel a dog i wasn't 100% happy with. A dog you ain't happy with will grind you down and make the kennels/hunting an unhappy experience. When that happens then the joy has gone and you'll start to resent the dog. Average is as average does and everyone has their own idea of what that is. 6 Quote Link to post
