J Darcy 5,871
I use Nikon and agree prime lenses are miles sharper I use a 300mm f4. Pin sharp....it's an old lens but takes good shots get that money spent and get a 2.8

paulus 26
I find 70 200 too short for lurcher pics a 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4 extender will give you 280mm at f4

Actually, on a cropped sensor it will give you 280mm, then add you're 1.4 on......400+  Mindst you, theory and practice ain't always good bedfellows..... the monkey 338
I Might give you 280 mm but it will never be as sharp as a prime 300 I,ve used the teleconverters before and never been happy with the results For wildlife shots I reach for 300 mm every time ,the 70 200 is good but not as sharp as a prime
Terra Firma 136
Well I've got £2-3k set aside for for a new camera or lens, as I said I want to upgrade my existing kit which is a 350D, but seems that a lens would be the better investment, followed by a body upgrade at a later date when I've gained enough knowledge to need it or get the best out of it. paulus 26
all depends i suppose on what you want to do, how far you want to go and how much you want to spend, to me the 70 - 200mm is great for mooching about the countryside with, not too heavy or cumbersome, if i was going after a shot that was either set up or guaranteed then one of the bigger more expensive lenses would be the way i would go but for mobile snap shooting on the hoof then the 70 - 200 suits me fine,

They are simply not crisp or sharp. I do not rate the 70-200...however it is versatile fro me doing still shooting, but for any kind of action then forget it. It all depends what he wants the lens for i guess...

Cleanspade 3,323
i would agree that the lens is the most important. but put it on a 350d and you are limiting its capabilities. i would upgrade tha bodu also. you will pay buttons to uprade to a used body with better capabilities. as the 350 has a small sell on value also.
