Mind at rugby time things can change a little, but it is all banter. TC Funny you should say that TC. My mrs and I were in a pub in Carmarthen watching the rugby during the 6 nations. It was rammed full of big hairy Welshmen (and women, lol) and they were the friendliest bunch going. A couple of them even sat at our table and we had a good craic all afternoon. There was some good-hearted piss-taking from both sides, but nothing that went too far. I USED to think the Welsh hated the English, and i can't say it's completely untrue, but luckily I've never been on the receiving end of it. Maybe I'm just very likeable. Many a true word spoken in jest Walshie. We Welsh as a nation do have a very dry subtle sense of humour, if anyone has the same then we get along fine. From the recent elections and the republican move towards the ballot box i honestly cannot see the segregation lasting a terrible lot longer….. Sinn Feinn are extremely strong in northern politics at the moment. I predict this thread will soon be closed and maybe a few bans handed out for insulting the easily offended lol If you learn a bit more about Northern Ireland's ancient history you'll see it's been separate from the rest of Ireland for as long as these Isles have been inhabited. Lol, please expand mate, I really dont understand how a lively debate can be seen as insulting…. i have studied irish history extensively… Northern Ireland has only been separate from the other 26 counties of the irish free state since the signing of the anglo irish treaty on 6th december 1921 (after the black & tan war which resulted in British forces leaving the other 26 counties). Previous to this Ireland as a whole had been subject to british rule since the time of the Normans. However my main point i tried to make is that the majority of these threads, similar to the ukip threads etc are basically a thinly veiled racist rant at anyone who is not of british origin. However after all the years of colonisation, oppression etc i only see the entrance of foreign nationals into your country as a form of a taste of your own medicine. When British forces enter a foreign country and seek to take power, assets etc they are seen as heroes… When many of the people you have in fact attempted to colonise decide to return the favour and enter your country you are up in arms about it. These isles were discovered and explored by water due to the thick forests probably,so settled in various places along the coasts. Northern Irish people would have been better able to trade with Scottish tribes,so developed their own unique culture and ethnicity. I don't think I can explain in any simpler terms why colonisation was necessary at the time. but if you're Irish and believe in a divine creator you should thank him for putting Ireland next to England and not France,Spain or Russia. because if he did there'd be no Ireland/Irish,you'd all have been wiped out long ago. paulf 820 Posted June 20, 2014 Report Share Posted June 20, 2014 i have never bought into welsh hating the english, on rugby days its just a bit of banter for me and pretty much everyone i know half of my family are from birmingham and i spent most of my summer holidays there and never had any shit from the locals ... i do get the odd sheepshagger crap from some of the farmers i get to see everyday i just reply the welsh shag them the english eat them which brings a smile and some other daft rubbish they try to think up but its always in jest and always will be .. 4 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

We're a nation where people have moved in, e.g. Vikings, Barbarians, Romans, etc, to the point where nobody is 100% pure English genetics. Wales, Scotland, and even Ireland (in part at least) are joined with the UK as being the United Kingdom. National pride is not about my principality is better than yours. It's about 'we, as a united nation, are fricking awesome!' I have Scottish heritage, went to uni in Wales, lives up North in the UK for years, now live down South in the UK. Guess what....it's the same nation. So national pride is not about the specific part of the nation you're from, it's about the nation as a whole. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
WhiteRabbit 112 Posted June 21, 2014 Report Share Posted June 21, 2014 Admittedly i'm not the most patriotic person when it comes down to things like world cup football or olympics, im not the competitive type but my pride does show when we win medals or if we actually won the world cup (LOL). initial thoughts: I do take where i live for granted because honestly, i've not been anywhere else to understand any differently but i do feel when it comes down to politics and how the country runs, we're a little too soft. I dont want to get started on the NHS or Dole but internationals SHOULD NOT be able to access it, whether you're struggling to find work here or the sickest person around... my grandparents and parents haven't fought wars and broke their backs working and paying their taxes for you to come over and abuse the system. *Rant Over* However, whenever i think deep down of the 4 little countries we call home, it does fill me with pride and patriotism with our culture, history and traditions, the people we call friends and family, the houses we call homes amongst other things we take for granted. We may moan about everything but thats a truly British trait we all carry White Whats the fourth?? England .. wales.. scotland and??? Despite politics, Ireland is still included as home to me and is in my own heritage from my grandparents and even with my partners family being Irish predominantly.
