Joe1888 672
got a old 200tdi, 1993 with 185,000 miles..when first started in morning she runs alittle lumpy, if it was a petrol id say sounded like it was miss firing when reved above 2000 rpm, also alittle smokey at start up. give it a couple revs and its runing good, once its driven down the street any clear signs of smoke from mirror is gone. is this normal for these old motors? i can do abit with petrol cars, this is first diesel/4v4 ive owned and will be working on. any helps appreicated
walshie 2,804
In order of suspects I'd say: 1: Glow plug 2: EGR Valve
donnyc 1,203
shouldnt really need glow plugs none of mine need them even in winter...As above Id blank the EGR .Put some injecter cleaner in it and .give it a good thrashing

tomburras 2,730
My 200tdi engine starts without glow plugs even when my 90 is covered in snow, and they don't have egr. Wouldn't worry about smoke on startup either its pretty normal from what if seen. Mine smokes like hell on startup but on the MOT test the emmisions where minimal. I wouldn't worry and just enjoy your landy. The 200tdi is a great engine!
stabba 10,745
It'll be down on an injector from cold. Once warm the injector will throw the fuel in. Likes been said..try some injector cleaner.

Joe1888 672
gave the disco a service today, oil/filter, fuel filter and cleaned the sedimentor (full of crap).. shes putting out some white smoke ( unburnt fuel ) when first started, i know the worst case it could be a compression issue but am hoping its going to be something less serious i.e injector as mentioned above.. ive used some redex, hasnt been half bottle to full tank, just a rough guess everytime i put fuel in...probaly used half now. anyone know if redex is any good, if so how much/many miles should i be expecting to use to get any benefit if its the injector. Redex is quite a rough treatment, f***ing ancient, primarily for fuel lines, techron do a decent one that helps with carbon build up etc.
Mooching Celt 659
Get a can of 10K Diesel and spray it direct into the turbo following the instructions.........you'll be amazed how much shite it clears out through the exhaust and how much better it runs
Ggib 370
tdi engines are great, but steering boxes leak, lt77 gear boxes are crap and they rot like hell, but they have an attraction
