Clarkey1990 0
Im buying my first rifle for hunting + target shooting. I have decided on the BSA Lightning XL Tactical in .177 calibre and just have a few questions. Would it be recommended to buy a bi-pod or is it not really needed? Is there a better pellet to use or is it all trial and error? Which scope would I be better with out of the following: Hawke Eclipse 12x50 AO IR mil-dot Hawke Eclipse 16x50 AO IR mil-dot Or is there not much difference in the 2? Any other tips would be appreciated too. Cheers Quote Link to post

Don't use a bipod on a springer, it will cause more problems than it solves Is there a better pellet to use or is it all trial and error? Stick with decent pellets and try them out. Other than the extra max mag. nothing between them. Any other tips would be appreciated too. Don't post "Give me a permission" as your next post or you will likely get ridiculed! Cheers Welcome to the forum. Edited June 13, 2014 by SimonC_Here 2 Quote Link to post

Clarkey1990 0
Thanks for the reply mate. Will avoid the bipod then. Looking forward to getting into this, seems like something that could be quite addictive. Quote Link to post

Hawke Eclipse 3-12x50 AO IR mil-dot Hawke Eclipse 4-16x50 AO IR mil-dot Either should do, but IR is just a novelty and seldom has a real benefit, and as the Eclipse are no longer made I take it you are getting a good price! Rez 4,961
Sort out whatever feels right to you. Any of the Hawke range will be sweet. In fact one of the members is flogging two of his Hawkes... A1WOC. Might be worth a pm. Dont get a bipod... Pellets wise, trail and error indeed. Bear in mind that 177 does kick slightly more than a 22. Hope it all goes well man Quote Link to post
Clarkey1990 0
Cheers for the input lads, will post some pictures when I get it. Probably be asking for more advice when it comes too haha Quote Link to post

risingfriend 1,042
wont go wrong with a hw or aa springer dependent on budget Quote Link to post
Clarkey1990 0
Looking to stay under about £400 new, all in, including a scope if thats any help Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
You'll pick up a sorted kit with a budget like that... Go HW mate. 95 maybe. Hawke air max or something on top, it would be so sound. I'm almost convincing myself. That's gotta be around your budget, easy. Best wishes. Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
hw 95 has to be better get a small quality mil dot scope .If it costs a little more it would be worth it .A lightning is a hard gun to shoot accurately because the trigger is a bit heavy ,so you will shoot loads of pellets practicing .A hw is a better build than gamo oh i mean bsa usually . Rez 4,961
95 and a hawke then... You will not regret it. Get one in your shoulder and see how it feels. Quote Link to post
silentshot1 206
I have a Lightening XL upstairs. The soring snapped after a couple of hundred pellets and as I had an HW77 as well, I never repaired the horrible thing. As already mentioned, an HW95 is far better and will make the hours of paper punching at various ranges before you start hunting a real pleasure! Don't scrimp on pellets either. Cheap ones are cheap for a reason. Buy a sample pack of good quality pellets from ebay and go from there. Oh, and then you'll want a PCP, range finder, chrono and every other toy going, so you might as well start saving, addiction can be expensive! 2 Quote Link to post
