trigger2 3,145
me nephew had a back op a few years ago and hes worse now than when he had it. morphine patches and god nows what other shit hes on for the pain. constapation from all the different pain killers hes on. he lives 8 miles from town and i bet ive onle seen him out a handfull of times over the past 5 years as a car journey puts him in agoney and pretty much destroys any sleep for that night. he was getting bad sciatica and on the odd ocassions his back would lock in a position for a certain amount of time. hes now 31 and got no life really. hes only got a small scare about 3-4 inches on his lower back where they operated on his disc's. he whishes he had left things alone as he did have a better life before his op. bad pain but slightly more mobile there's a chap 3 doors down from my mother whos had a bad back for years hes had a back op again loads of sciatica hes more mobile than my nephew gets about using a crutch reckons it done very little for his bad back hes got a massive scare down his back. i aint sure but i am sure they went to the same hospital for there op so it might of been the same surgoen. to be honest its not the type of place i would a operation on. having said that theres got to be others who have had a better time of things than the 2 lads i have just mentioned. skycat 6,173
That's scary stuff to read. I've had back problems for years: squished discs, muscle spasms, and now there might be the option of surgery: reading this I'm not so sure that I really want to risk it. skycat 6,173
biglurks: I know what you mean: all the doctors want to do is throw more drugs at you, it has taken me months and months to get them to refer me: MRI scans are very expensive, and lower back pain is one of the biggest problems with people today, and no doubt many are scammers trying for an easy life. Which makes it all the more unfair on people who are genuinely in pain. When the problem is not obviously visible to the eye, it needs a lot more in depth intervention by specialists before anyone can be sure what the problem is.
micky 3,325
I know two people have had it done and it turned their lives around ,one was my eldest daughter whom was virtually bed bound for the last two years and is now back playing tennis and riding horses the other is a blacksmith who sometimes comes on this site .
Caravan Monster 323
When the problem is not obviously visible to the eye, it needs a lot more in depth intervention by specialists before anyone can be sure what the problem is. +1 I've been going to doctors and chiropractors with back problems for most of my adult life. Earlier on this year, the doctor worked out there was a problem in my ankle and sent me to a podiatrist (foot doctor). More or less sorted everything in one thirty minute session. Turns out there was an old injury that had got worse over the years that wrecked my posture and caused the back problems. I reckon I did it running wheelbarrows up scaffold boards, falling badly when a board broke. I do have to do daily stretching and balancing exercises and make the effort to go do exercise to build the muscles back up. And I won't get back all the time in pain and struggling at work through my twenties and thirties or the thousands I've spent on chiropractic treatment, but it's been life changing to finally get sorted. All I can suggest is to keep on asking around as many medical people as possible, especially those involved with bio-mechanics (pay if you have to) and try as many things as possible before relying on drugs or having surgery done. skycat 6,173
That's my next port of call: I've heard there's a good one near where I live: they put you on a treadmill and analyse your gait for starters: is that the sort of thing you mean?
Caravan Monster 323
Yes. How well can you balance stood on one leg ?
skycat 6,173
Huh? Not too bad with my arms out for balance.
Caravan Monster 323
Pat your head and rub your tummy ? No honestly, the standing on one leg thing is a way of putting strain on one side of the body to highlight weakness.
nipper78 81
Had the same thing about 6 years ago, they had to shave a bulge off of one of my disks, only after i tried every pain killer possible,it done the job for me, i was one of the lucky ones, the worst thing of all was coming down from the df118's after the op.
