Simoman 110
imo you should only keep as many dogs as you can provide proper regular work for . The most sensible and obvious reply IMO
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Personally, I think Wilf about cracked it there: The correct amount is as many as you need and less than you want Or, as a wise man said: " Never get a new Dog untill ye've got all ye possibly will out of the one ye have. " That too, to me, makes a Lot of sense
J Darcy 5,871
The problem with having too many dogs is that you struggle for work for them. ....so....you start doubling up.....so....you will kid yourself about the quality of the dogs. IMHO you need ALOT of work for one lurcher to really give it a good testing career.... Some think that the more dogs someone owns the better dogman they are......they are wrong.... T.F.Student 0
The only thing with one dog is...if anything happens to that one...where are you? Two years behind!!!
J Darcy 5,871
Im not saying only have one dog...what i am saying is that you need alot of work to give that single dog plenty. Ideally perhaps it would be best to have a sapling coming along....but this is not always an ideal world.... I have known people with four or five lurchers, when,in reality they didnt have the work for one!! they still caught 2 foxes, 10 hares and 30 rabbits a season ,just that it was spread round all their dogs.... better for them to put their efforts into just the one IMHO........but,its each to their own.... Guest MOLLY
Ive got enough. Three lurchers, one is retired and one is 5yrs now, so will be replaced during the next 2 years by the pup...if he can hold on for 2yrs Two terriers, both completely different in temp and working style so both worth their weight in gold in their own ways. So even though ive got 5 ive only actually got 1 lurcher and 2 terriers on the go. MOLL.

Neal 1,873
I agree with WILF's well worded answer. My own policy was going to be to get a new pup every four to five years based on length of working life etc. However, although I've done that with the last three, ie they're eight, four and 14 weeks, I'm thinking of extending the gap as, due to the fact that they're kelpies, they seem to be working much longer than I anticipated. greatwhitehunter 47
i dont think it matters how many dogs a person has as long as there looked after and in good condition and walked daily
