Ideation 8,216
I've got a young lurcher bitch here, collie/whip/grey/saluki/bull, and she is the weirdest dog i've ever owned. It's nothing major, just her personality traits. Firstly she is super protective, and views anyone and everything with suspicion, especially if they come anywhere near me, she also barks at any other dog or person that approaches, and any strange noise at night. Recently we're having a problem when the farm dogs miles up the valley bark at night, very faintly audible here. . . . . and she barks at them in response, waking everyone up! She also HATES me giving affection to any other animal, doesn't matter if its one of the other dogs, or even just me picking up one of the chickens, she goes mad, barking at them, and then tries to bully her way in between me and whatever else it is. She is also like a bottle of pop, it doesn't matter how many hours I have her out for. . . . . she is still full of energy, and when you come into the house, plays games with herself, such as catch, whereby, she will pick up a ball or shoe and toss it up in the air and catch it herself. . . . . if you don't acknowledge how clever she is being she will either throw said thing at you, or at whatever you are doing - i.e at the t.v or at something you are working on. She loves affection, but only on her terms, apart from that she is not overly keen on being touched, or held, and I get the impression if a stranger tried to grab her she would nail them if she couldn't dance out of the way. She opens doors, draws and generally steals things. And she is very possessive over anything she has deemed hers. on the up side, she is incredibly strong, fast as feck, turns on a six pence, and would run through a wall to get what she is after. She also picks things up very very quickly, ten mins with the lamp, and she got looking down the beam, spotting rabbits, returning when the lamp is off etc. And has been a doodle to break to stock (so far), she retrieves well and jumps like a deer. But f**k me. . . . she winds you up! Quote Link to post

bird 9,916
Oh I do hope so matey. . . . . she sounds very loyal to you, and sounds like not bad dog , that will get good bags rabbits for you with natural ability . Now my young dog Buck total opposite to her, he don't give fook about me, I think he bonded to Bryn as young pup, he thinks the world of him.I kennelled him with him as small pup for 3 months , and even though there not kennel together now ,the bond still strong for Bryn from Buck. Buck loves people+dogs, he happily go with anybody else I know that . But his work rate + prey drive is 100% , he very full on and will tackle what ever he sees in front of him day+night . So jai , what would you have loyal dog that drives you nuts, but good worker, or great worker who not bothered about you, as long as he can kill some thing and he fed and warm bed to sleep in . But f**k me. . . . she winds you up! Older bitch we have is exactly the same, apart from being possessive, also now getting a tad more aggressive with the younger dog, he's coming up to 11 months. I know that's down to her being a very dominant bitch though, she was from a litter of 9, all bitches, and by f**k, she is a very dominant bitch. Very intelligent and fairly easy to train basic stuff, but you've got to be on your toes all the time with her, otherwise she'd be bossing you. It certainly isn't easy, but like you say, she has 'many' positives as regards work/hunting Quote Link to post
tsteve9999 456
My pup is similar in some ways to yours in that he will give a low wuff at anything even slightly strange, such as people in the distance, and bark at any sound in the house. He also tries to get in between me and the old dog if I'm giving him any attention. He was like a bottle of pop but at nearly 9 months he's calming down a lot though still very immature, and he's really submissive so he's been a doddle to train so far. Quote Link to post

She knows EXACTLY who the boss is. The question is . . . . . who is second in command? lol. Seriously though, all of my dogs know that I am in charge, but this bitch has a real personality, and a real need to be interacting with me at all times. Also, I think she is probably smarter than half of the folk on this site Quote Link to post
