Fat-Ferret 857
My old bitch now 13...Her lamping days are long over always stalked squatters....Personally, I loved seeing her do it....Creeping down the beam, almost sometimes as if she was pretending she didnt see the rabbit, and then bang - Lifting it straight out of its seat! 1 Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
My old bitch does it sometimes. Not every slip, probably 1 in 10. Some lads love to see it but it pisses me off. I prefer to see a dog flat out down the beam. 1 Quote Link to post

fitchet 788
Not for me hate it prefer a dog to go straight for the kill feck that stalking carry on I agree mate. Lucky enough never had a dog stalk quarry but if it did It would piss me off there running dogs it's never those easy squatters that stick out in my mind when I'm on the way back from lamping it's allways those those runs where it could go either way. It would be different if I was lamping high numbers of educated rabbits though and I've seen dogs stalk daytime rabbits a couple of times not herding blooded dogs either. But then again most dogs of there owners are honest have faults and sometimes I guess you just have to make do with what you got I suppose. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I think my dog has done it. . . . . twice. Both times, it was a squatter in long ish grass, and he trotted down the beam slow and as he got near, kind of accelerated and jumped at the same time, I suppose a pounce, and both times, nailed the bunny in the seat. Every other time, its flat out down the beam, and i've seen him catch rabbits sat very close to the fence, and on occasion just inside the fence / hedge, by suddenly coming at them like a small, black, bat out of hell, and panicking them into doing something stupid, or just nailing them before they can think / act. bird 9,863
What about running off with its catch is that deemed a fault? yep , its working for it self, and not with you , how old is the dog is it a young dog .? Quote Link to post
*The*Field*Marshall* 674
My friends bitch does it and she's predominately SALUKI !! No collie, she's all running, I kid you not. . It's not something I see as a fault at all, but I certainly don't like it. I prefer to see a no hesitation 110% kamikaze like commitment to the task at hand, it doesn't always pay off though, in fact I think slower is generally better than faster when it comes to dog up against a squatting rabbit. . Just prefer the no nonsense type of hound . Quote Link to post
Allan P 1,149
He's 2 bird it was a bit tongue in cheek comment. I've gone back to basics with him and hopefully this next season we'll come good. Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
I doesn't bother me if a dog trots up to a squatter, if its a long way out.... I think the difference is when a dog stops then starts again and keeps stopping on its way out... My dog cuts the rabbits off, so he will often trot up to a squatter then when it bolts he nearly runs parallel with it to race it back to the hedge...No collie either Quote Link to post
