Outlaw Pete 2,224
Completely banal and pointless question, I s'pose. But, it just occurred to me; Which leg do ye ring your birds on? I've been taught to always ring the right leg. So it reads top to bottom, on the standing bird. The second bit makes sense. But, what about you ABC Ringers? Do any of ye 'governing bodies' suggest a particular leg?
fireman 10,935
Any leg,any way up .It's awarkward enough trying to hold the bloody things let alone holding a wriggling chick in one hand then trying to turn a ring around in the other. But the way i hold a chick it's usaly on the right leg ,i think
readie 184
always rung on left leg but im left handed, most birds ive bought in have rings on there right legs.
mule123 112
think most people are right handed so tend to do right leg as it can be fiddly just my opinion pete atb
Millet 4,497
I hold the chick in my left hand and ring with my right hand..when you ring the chick the leg/foot need's to be pointing away from you so you can get the ring on easy so the right leg is the nearest to you if you are right handed and the left leg if you are left handed..if you catch my drift.. Outlaw Pete 2,224
Mm. Interesting stuff. Cheers, lads. Must say; I don't envy you poor sods one bit! Ye must need hands as steady as concrete blocks and absolutely laser vision! I'm alright. I get to do shit like like wait till their eyes are open. I deal with firm, feathery little bodies and stiff little legs. F**k what you have to do; Getting a piggy bank onto a marshmallow! Just as an aside; The wild young are about in force now! This morning I had two starlings. Incredibly, unringed! So, where the f**k were they hatched??? I have three colonies of ten boxes each up around here ..... Ah! Could these have been from that nest we get, every year, behind the steel of Pat's cattle shed? Right. That said, I have a box full need my attention out there right now! Bloody weather's been holding me back. Time to go and get shit all over again!
tong po 129
I rung 5 bully chicks the other day and was struggling with one that was abit on the large side and thought id have to leave the ring off then tried it on the other leg and it went on.so my opinion is which ever leg you can get the bloody things on
