dogmad riley 1,344
Theres a bloke in the terrier section who uses collies with some success. I think collies would make great ferreting dogs in tight areas Quote Link to post
*The*Field*Marshall* 674
Pointless jargon morton. The man is asking if the dog can be of any use to his lamping and ferreting expeditions, not how well he can train it. Assuming the dog is trained to basic obedience, merely break him to ferrets, show him the lamp like you would any other dog and who knows, he might be of good use. Nothing ventured nothing gained. 3 Quote Link to post

nothernlite 18,089
The question is will she let you use her pet ? Edited June 8, 2014 by nothernlite Quote Link to post
beast 1,884
seen a couple of collies which were very good round the warrens, bushing, hunting up, ratting etc. seen one half decent on the lamp, although i wouldnt say it was a patch on a half cross. my old mum had one on her smallholding years ago which would kill the odd fox when out with the running dogs and they put it into cover. collies can be great fun and handy tools. good luck, let us know how you get on. 2 Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
If you have a Beddy/Bull/Greyhound, a Collie will make you sit up and beg . Drink time here and after fighting red mite all day my head need's a bit more of THL therapy .. lol .. that statement made me laugh.. here is my version.. .. Get Ready.. If you have a bull x of any kind you may fill the freezer on occasion's or many occasion's until injury kick's in which can be quick on most circumstances .. but if you have a collie or the right bred collie x that can do the same and more without the vet bill's.. now some one tell me i'm thick which i know they will... what seem's a better option..a liabiliy waiting to happen or a liability that might happen.. 1 Quote Link to post

trenchfoot 4,243
use your collie with your lurcher, handy for pushing stuff out of cover, but the end result can get a bit messy! 1 Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
I'm always a hairs breath away, from keeping a pure Herding breed,..it is a desire I have had for many years Herding is simply hunting,..and the Collie types usually take to rabbiting real easily. I will get old Shep some day,...it is only a matter of time... Edited June 9, 2014 by Phil Lloyd 4 Quote Link to post
Neal 1,869
It's definitely worth stepping over to "the dark side" Phil. When I got Rust I had no expectations and just wanted to enjoy him as a mate to tag along while I hunted with my lurcher but his character won me over. Whenever I describe it to people I liken it to Victor Kiam on the Remington ads: "I liked it so much I bought the company." As I've said on here many times before I don't catch anywhere near as much as people with even mediocre lurchers but I love every minute of it. 4 Quote Link to post
