just bought a cobble, and thinking about giving it a go getting a shellfish license .

will you have to go deep or will it be mainly in shore.

mainly inshore half a mile out or so. im just getting my head round the licences. iv been out with a lad afew times and the majority or stuff he was getting in nets or pots was close in.

same as that, we work a half to a mile to a mile and a half out as well, the paper work can be a pain.

how much gear were you thinking of working,pot are expensive to buy over here, but sometime you can pick up seconds handy enough.

iv got 100 pots, a boat moored in the marina and no licence

 

every thing is canny hard to understand to me, cat A engine in KW ect...

If the boat does not have a licence, you will need to know it's VCU Vessel capacity units, to work out how much the licence is going to cost you.

 

This is the formula used to find the VCU of a boat.

 

(Length over all X Breadth) + ( Engine Power X 0.45 )

Lenght and Breadth are in Meters
Engine Power is in Kilowatts ( Kw)
note:To convert horsepower to kilowatts divide the horsepower by 1.341.

example: boat length = 6 meters, breadth = 2.5meters, Engine power = 20Kilowatts

therefore
( 6m X 2.5m ) + ( 20 X 0.45 ) =
( 15 ) + ( 9 ) = 24 VCU's

is there much money in netting and potting, as ill have well over £10,000 in boat and licence?

I know a few lads that do the pots they make on avg about 25 k a year for them selfs and some years 15k just depends you thought about making some Buckie pots as we'll make them out of drums

When I first had my licence, they were given to you. Before then you only had to register the boat and have your port numbers. Licences started off @ around the £ per unit not sure what they are now, but they are an investment, and will never loose money.

this might be a daft question but are they a yearly thing to buy? like the 10 free tags you get, have to renew them off the fisheries?
