FERRETBOY 680
This has been really niggling me a lot lately so I thought I would share it with you guys. In two months time I should be getting a dog fit ready for next seasons hunting but again like the last few years all I have is my old lurcher fly to hunt with once or twice a week. Because she has trouble with her feet she is best suited to the ferreting game and not lamping or daytime retrieving which I really miss. We did go out 3 weeks ago and she caught 3 rabbits on lamp but missed a few more. I am happy with what ever she catches these days but some times its not enough. Now im driving I would like to hunt all over the UK and not just watching other dogs hunt but having one myself that could go out time after time. But heres my problem. I have been wanting to get a pup early on this year to bring on but now it would be to late to have one ready to hunt with next seasonr.I would also like a pup out of my old bitch when I breed her but Im in no position though to have three dogs, especially not two pups. So I have been thinking of getting a older dog ready for the season but don't want to be taking on a dog with problems or the opposite and not feeling the achievements because its somebody else that's put the work in . I don't want to be passing on a lurcher after I have had it for a season either. What to do ay? As you can imagen Im ready to put everything into the next lurcher that I have, work wise and training but have no clue what I should do for the better. Edited June 3, 2014 by REW Quote Link to post
woodga 170
The answer is really quite straight forward look for a working adult dog that doing the job now ask for a trial if its not what you want then dont take it on .nothing hard in that .. Does anyone really sell a quality dog for no reason i know i wouldnt , Well a pup the first year is all about bonding and getting the basics down ,recall retrive ,jumping ect and gradually having a dog thats worth the kennel space ,you get nothing for nothing mate you will have to put the work in some time and seeing a pup you have brought on catching and eager to please is all worth the effort As the saying goes you can only piss with the cock you have got ........... 1 Quote Link to post
bird 9,982
well get a older dog then, and you want to see it do a bit 1st,before you think off having it .Its always a risk taking on other peoples dogs, as you say the dog could have probs yapping, pissing off etc , that's why you got to se it work 1st. but you might drop on good dog that the owner just carnt keep for honest reasons . a pup long job ok you may bond with it, be what you want temp+work, but you want a dog now to knock few over so go for a older dog now I think. 1 Quote Link to post
weasellurcher 113
Being controversial...... why don't you just get a pup now, bonding with it through the summer and although it wont be ready for this coming season the dog, if all goes well could last you more than 10 years so it would be worth the wait! I think the pup might be ready to run a few rabbits late in the season as well..? good luck mate 2 Quote Link to post
FERRETBOY 680
Not seen many litters advertised and not many I like the sound off. That's why I would like to breed my own but when that happens I don't know. My only option is to buy an adult if I want a dog to work this season but they are few and far between. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
What caused your bitches feet problems? And would that be something to think about when breeding her? 2 Quote Link to post

FERRETBOY 680
I trialled a dog last season bred out of Andys Don. The bitch caught me 11 rabbits on lamp and retrieved them back . I obviously didn't have the bitch in the end and did feel a bit of a tit for not taking her but I honestly prefere longdog types for some daytime work. Quote Link to post

FERRETBOY 680
To Ideation , Fly broke her first toe running down train line. Very fast bitch, ran her on bad ground in the past and probabley didn't give her enough road work. I had sciatica and could only take enough pain killers to go out once a week lamping or daytime before my operation. Since her amputated toes, the other have had to take the work load since. FERRETBOY 680
That's a nice dog but Im looking for a bitch. That breeding would be ideal , always liked the sound of this cross. Been looking at similar sites . thanks Edited June 3, 2014 by REW 1 Quote Link to post
roybo 2,873
Personally,I'd get a pup, bond with it ,train it put every bit of time in to it Let it pick up everything off the old bitch, Think long term,I know it's hard, thinking about not having a dog ready but if you can get another season out the old bitch, and put a lot of time into a pup I'm sure the rewards would more than pay for the waiting now, Just my opinion,as I've done the older dog thing and found it hard to bond, yet a pup you've brought on you will give all your spare time to. Good luck it's nice sometimes to have a quandary! Edited June 3, 2014 by roybo Quote Link to post
weasellurcher 113
have a look around, on that same website theres a litter of pups of that cross that parents work with ferrets and lamping. good luck! Quote Link to post
Guest vin
Hate to say "told you so" but you had a chance with a good honest dog off Andy. To get offered anything similar or as honest from a genuine person might be a bit of a big ask. You might get lucky and find a dog that's genuine...but then there's all the other factors that you want out of your new companion. Get a pup mate.. there's a few good litters about and by the end of this winter you will have given it a start and should have an idea of what its going to be like. PS... where's the Videos ?
