Pipe Trap

Just a swift update, lads; Thanks for the support ~ I need all I can f*ckin get!

The thing that's bugging me is the practically useless setting on these things. It's next to impossible to explain - ye'd have to handle one - but it's nearer impossible to set anything like lightly. It's all done from the outside and, as I remember, with lots of unsuitable fingers and a fair bit of brute strength involved :(

Thus I have no illusions about taking a bitch. It'll have to be a full sized, heavily fed ol' dog mink and he'll have to hit that pan like he means it. Without four hands, I just can't really jiggle it much finer. Bloody thing!

This particular model also lacks any sembelance of a safety catch - such reassurance at That would be, if ye chose to stick ye own hand in there, trying for a better set!

But, despite all that; Acting on a heads up from " Tawney " last night, I've sent for a bottle of " Winterised Mackeral Oil " to juice it up with  I have my own Mink Gland lure here, but the experts point out that, at this time of year and coming, they're more interested in feeding than bothering about their now gone sex drives.

I don't want to over egg things, so I'll try the fish oil - once it arrives - first. Only failing that will I mess with a touch of both.

So, I'm up there checking it daily. It's as good a spot as I have, really. Let's see how this one goes :)

Just a lightning update; Checked it today - as every day - and nothing happening. (Moles; I examined the till and I'm now a bit happier that she is set about as fine as an out of the box can be. I set it on a bit of an impulse and never had time to f*ck about)

But, anyway; Today, as I walked up there, I found my bottle of " Wychwood; Winterised Fish Oil " (Mackeral) had arrived. So I laced it with that :) See if that makes any differance :good:

Ditch are you 100% sure there are mink active?

LL - they might not be as thick on the ground as they are on your 'Little Avon' but there are mink running the ditches at DS's place - I have seen the ground with my own eyes mate.

setting a trap correctly is very important to get a swift and humane death ,it should never be clased as f*****g about :notworthy:

Except that, in this types case, Moles, it would simply be a matter of catching one at all or not. The Pipe's of such a manner of construction that any mink firing it would have to physically be in the right position to recieve the traps full potential. Unless, of course, it was executing a three point turn on the pan.

No, I'm quite satisfied that the only wrong which could result from my self percieved rushing of that particular set would be little bitches skipping daintilly across the bloody thing all night without it dropping.

In short, as Chalks has already pointed out; It's just not the best designed trap. I shall certainly look foreward to what ever improvements we are to be presented with though. I think the concept has a lot of potential.

Haven't you a view on the type?

i think the idea is exellent ,you got a tunnel and trap all in one ,you can just set it and then chuck a load of weeds over it and you got a mink set, but like you say , theres room for improvement, i think the size is very good cos anything entering cannot bugger about inside and will have to jump on the pan and not over it, the trap bit is far enuff in that only something small enuff can enter and get caught , the trigger is a bit harsh , but it does work ,apparently, i suppose its like anything , once you get used to setting it , its easy, just like the bodygrip trap

I will have to have a play with the one I have tomorrow - I cannot honestly say that I have tried to set it. I just thought it looked interesting and bought it, a long time ago. Apparently they are demon on squirrels too

Actually, lads ~ He Said ..... Loudly enough that Chalks might over hear him! :whistling: ~ I feel that pan might be a bit bigger. Stretch further Across? Have a look, the pair of ye. Don't ye reckon? I mean, this is only a thought from memory. I lituraly just remember staring up there and thinking, " Hmm ... ".

It also definately needs a safety catch. I'd be happier with a finger hole beneath it, to access that pans lip when setting. I also wouldn't mind a more regular, flat dog, like on Fenn's etc. Nightlatched or night latchable. That'd be handy.

Other than that? Like Moles says; Looks the part. I mean, it could be knocked into one hell of a trap, no? Light enough to carry. Complete with its own - nice, deep tunnell. Tell if it's fired without needing to get down and bugger about. In fact, the more I think of it, the more it's growing on me! I wouldn't mind a dozen 'Improved' versions to kick off with! Would indeed be a good one on squirrels. Lot cheaper that a Kania too!

Here! Tell ye what? How about smaller ones, for rats? But maybe they'd be better with some sort of lining? Rats are said to prefer not walking onto steel? :hmm:

Anyway, looks like we're finally getting an interesting discussion going here!

Now that would be a good idea! Just the same but 50% smaller in dimension? I am sure that would be a killer on weasels and stoats too . . .

Maybe a flocked interior would help with the rat vs shiny steel issue?

My own trap has been painted on the outside to camouflage it, I was not sure if it came that way or was done by the trapper - whatever, it will certainly be one I dig out in the morning for a 'test drive' and refamiliarisation.
