stroller 341
Dee they are very soft and sensitive and take forever to grow up but they aren't as headstrong as the gwp apart from that they work fairly similarly Quote Link to post
kyboy44 11
Maybe one of you all can answer some questions for a guy that know nothing about gwp I am from the U.S. and always saw them as bird dogs but find on YouTube they been used for deer pointing on deer like birds cause me to find that they have been used for other game deer would be against the laws but I was thinking about rabbit and fox which from what I have read they have been used on and to coyote which we have a big problem with here I know nothing about gun dogs as I grew up with hounds and I was just wounding how you would get a pointer going on game do you bring them along like a hound or do you have to bring them up different from hounds think you for your help as I am going be move in with my girlfriend and will not have the space or money to keep a big pack of hounds and like the idea of one dog to find different game Quote Link to post
jossa 966
This is my pointer, I cant fault him he has done 3 solid seasons on the grouse and I also take him digging with me, he isnt frightened to get mucked in at the hole. His nose is second to none. He stands 26"tts and has the heart of a lion. Excellent dogs in my opinion. He has just lined his 1st bitch I will be keeping a pup back for definate. 3 Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Growing well MIK, hows he shaping up? I remember the first day I got my pup home she was pointing/stalking hoodies on the beach, was amazing to see the instinct to point straight away. Kyboy, I use mine more for the deer, fox and boar, more than bird hunting, but she is a good pointer, great retrieve. I can echo tiercels comments to a T, as I also started with spaniels, and I am also just so glad I made the decision to get into pointers when I did. Im planning on putting a good bull/deerhound over mine, for my next generation of big game hunters. But fingers crossed in the future I would also keep the pure wirehair line going as I would not like to be without this breed ever again Good hunting DnN Quote Link to post
MIK 4,756
I have been busy with work and when I have had freetime im either shooting ,fishing or hunting so ive not spent alot of time with him ....today was the first time I have spent just one on one with him and what a differant dog ...usually hes just a headless chicken chasing and being a pest to the other dogs as most pups are ...his retrieving is good ..recall is good so just going to spent a bit of time with him this next few weeks ...he s going to be a strong animal got good bone like a hound and just a big happy pup ..I can see its going to be a challange but im sure it will be worth it ....like youve said mate and everyone ive spoke to have all said the same thing they wouldnt ahve any other breed Quote Link to post

jessdale 416
Smart looking thing that Mik. What's the breeding behind him? Quote Link to post
MIK 4,756
JD the sire is from Kimax kennels and is owned by my dad and the bitch is owned by a mate that I dont know the breeding but she is decent and is out 2-4 times a week every week during the season Quote Link to post
jessdale 416
Train him, train him and then train him some more. Then when you think he is trained train him some more. If they are worked before they are ready, which most of them are, they can come off the rails in some fashion. I once saw a dog at a novice hpr trial course, catch and kill a sheep in double quick time. 2 Quote Link to post
