Tommy.H 0
Need advice on a good leather cleaner and a conditioner. Previously used neatsfoot oil and that was OK. Looking for really good stuff this is to clean and restore a vintage leather bag. Cheers.

unicornleather 60
Don't use oil only on veg tanned leather, it really doesn't do it much good. It doesn't condition the leather as well as greases and fats do. Old leather that was tanned many years ago is entirely different in it's make up than todays hides, the old leather can take neatsfoot oil, new modern hides can't the Ph is wrong, neatsfoot will make the fibres of the leather go soggy, weaken them and stretch them. If you saw the fibres of the hide under a microscope after oiling it, you'd see what I mean. Conditioner is far superior to oil. Any conditioner that contains lanolin, tallow and beeswax is good, avoid some of the "easy to apply" quick conditioners as they contain silicone and polishes that in my experience don't feed the leather that well. Polishes actually can seal the fibres too well and not allow any more conditioner in.
