Panna 68
reading between the lines a few pist of people. Seems like. But bad experiences may bring development! I am sorry that this time ULG couldn't come for a good boar hunt due to unforeseen circumstances, but I can report, that the hunting season in Hungary went great again, here are some pics of yesterday's hunt. 30 wild animals were driven to guns by (33) people and (14) dogs yesterday. Deers, moufflons, 1 fox, but mostly wild boars of all gender and age. It was the 3rd day of a 3-days hunt, all in all 79 wild animals. The weather was great, not too cold and no rain. We drive on hills, but nothing that an average woman could not make any time. The ground is good for dog's legs, altough we don't used to have lurchers and sighthounds, more teckels, terriers of all sort and mix, Slowakian Hounds and maximum GWP sized dogs. The gait is easier for dogs then for humans, but believe me, when you hear there is an action close to you, you can move surprisingly fast! There are guns and knives in the line we go, so in case the dogs would need some instant help, they have it. They can also have a rag afterwards. The hunt starts at 8AM. We are taken with cars from the hunting house to the hunting place. (This is an UAZ, some russian van, but they also have Land Rovers and a Mercedes Unimog - ULG's fav - to take people and dogs out to the place.) At around 1PM we have a warm lunch and then we kep on. A nice head to make more apetite...to go out The hunting house for the guests, this time we drove for hungarian and swiss hunter guests. The result of 3 days. The arranging of the animals and the place is still not finished I am less interested in the result, more in the animals when they are alive and in the work of my dog, but here are 2 pics of some "nice knives" of yesterday and finally a pic of my wee Russell that did quite nice and worked the whole day, I am proud of him! Hope for next season. ATB, Anna 6 Quote Link to post
Panna 68
Brilliant pictures , cheers for sharing Panna. Am I correct in saying that lurchers and sighthounds are not allowed in the hunt? You certainly have the ground for them though, some lovely beasts there. ATB Joe Well, we had ULG's lurcher with us last year. For bigger dogs, such as a pointer they say that they tend to be harmed easier due to their size, but they also allowed DnN's GWP to work. ATB, Anna Quote Link to post
Panna 68
These bigger sized dogs are not used in hungarian hunts. But I must also say that we only have 1 lurcher breeder in all Hungary and for pointers and sighthounds there are other options for work. We have many terrier types (and their mixes), herding dogs and the wire teckel. YIS, Anna Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
I might have the wrong end of this stick, but a lot of the discussion from this seems to point to the fact that it is pretty unique to the UK to use dogs to catch large running game in Europe. I can't find much on running dogs in the rest of northern Europe. Quote Link to post
Bossie 90
Hunting with lurchers and longdogs has been banned for almost 100 years over here. There is a very long tradition of hunting with sight hounds but due to a anti dog hunting campaign started by the rich gun hunters. Boar is driven and caught. Those who shoot are invited or have payed to do so. Catching a lot with dogs is not appreciated in such a setting. However managing the boar population is becoming more and more pest control, dogs like the bigger heideterriers are catching boar more and more. Usually in packs. See if I can accompany you next time with a few more dogs. 1 Quote Link to post

I was in Finland last August, and there were a lot of hares knocking around and I was wondering if anyone ran them. Quote Link to post
Bossie 90
Yes there was, especially in the flatter parts: Flanders/ Belgium and Netherlands. Over were I'm located up to around 1920. 1 Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Ive not had much chance to get online, but heres a few pics from the spain hunt. I like the land a lot out there, but scenting conditions were not great. I got a nice video of the pointer taking a line away on the last hunt of the first day, shortly followed by midge then gwen on the same line, was probably a fox. In the end we never managed to tackle the drives as planned, but we had a good old rake about. All the dogs put in plenty of miles and the bushers had some good runs on roe, boar and fox. I would have liked to see the big dogs on game, and some roe were very lucky not to get caught by them, if only they were boar. Ive got some plans to get the dogs over to France shortly, and still deciding what to do on the return to Spain in October. 6 Quote Link to post

From what I have read on here an Ozzie style running chatch dog may bring more success. I'm thinking an animal capable of scenting, hunting and holding a pig all on its own. I reckon it would be fun to try and breed such an animal from the raw materials available here in the UK. Anyone wanting to get involved in such a venture, drop me a PM. 1 Quote Link to post

And these were only the pics of the last boar hunt, also previous ones were good enough! Thank you, I am also very happy for him, I even got many good feedbacks from hunters - both local and guest hunters! So he has surely took his fair amount of work. I count with you and count on you for next season, ULG! Bring the missus, we'll put her to a thermal spa while we work! YIS, Anna Edited January 19, 2015 by Panna Quote Link to post
