Ideation 8,216 Posted January 12, 2015 Report Share Posted January 12, 2015 I'll add my tuppence worth later. But it was the worst ground you can possibly imagine to run lurchers on. I'd never take a running dog there in a million years. They usually use 20 beaters, 50 hounds and 20 guns to do this 4000 Hectare, ragged mountainous, wilderness. And those beaters and dogs are used to the ground, the quarry and working together. We got close a few times, errors were made, boar was lost. Closest I saw was when Ollie and Gwen hunted one large Boar for around 3 miles (had GPS on), pushing it out of cover twice. Eventually managed to get a lurcher sighted (I was on my own with the dogs) and set it off in pursuit. Dog managed to grab its arse, but the chance of anchoring a 80kg boar, with one dog, on that ground was next to impossible. If I returned it wouldn't be with Lurchers. It would be with less people, and far more hounds. Luckily the company made the trip worthwhile. And to be honest, I went out there with a hound with the hope that she would hunt, flush and work boar, with no expectation of her stopping one. So all in all, I was very happy with the dogs performance. 5 Quote Link to post

Maybe with more people and more dogs we could of caught or perhaps just focused on spotting one boar and chasing the bugger down rather than working entire gullies through? who knows! Either way it was an adventure and I got to hang out with some great guys I never get the opportunity to hunt with normally.
