buster gonads 862
Your right HM, its very rarely talked about but just taken for granted, hand on heart the DH cross has the best i,v come across although i have little experiance with saluki's. Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
I like deerhounds and there crosses but would only ever have another if I wanted a big dog, that's what they are and that's what makes them hat they are lol without the added height weight and length of stride it ain't a deerhound or a x. So this cross baffles me, and I ain't even started on breeding 2 extremes lol the diffrence in future pups size would he enough alone to put me off, it's only my thought but it's my thought that even whippet and grey mixed in lurchers is a bit hit and miss and for that reason I wouldn't buy own or use for breeding any dog that had both, but that's just me Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Good point. Kind of taking two opposite dogs and breeding out whats handy about both. 1 Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
In my mind it's like trying to create a whippet ith a grey and an Italian grey, just buy a whippet lol Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Yer pretty much. Quote Link to post
shaaark 10,765
Yes, but there are quite a few whippet x salukis being bred, same thing, extremes, so why breed them? I'd much rather have a whip/deer than a whip/saluki Quote Link to post
shaaark 10,765
Go on then H M, start, as you're so up on all things lurcher, DEER/GREY mid-distance x WHIP/GREY sprint, what's the point? Or saluki/grey x whip/grey, same thing really, tell me what's the point Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
Your one a them fellas who starts a thread an all is well an good I till you are disagreed with lol I'll let you crack on with your pipe dreams lol Quote Link to post
buster gonads 862
Good point. Kind of taking two opposite dogs and breeding out whats handy about both. Why are you breeding out, why are you not improving what they both offer, after all a DH is far too big for todays world, the law being what it is, but if you bring the size down to say 24-25" i could find it a job most days and the smaller one's should make excellent rabbit dogs. My glass is always half full . 1 Quote Link to post
shaaark 10,765
H M, it's not pipe dreams, or that I mind being disagreed with, just more thoughts on what I think could be a good type of dog. And with you saying 'don't get me started with breeding two extremes', well I don't get it, like I said, plenty of people been breeding whippet/salukis over the years, and that's as much an extreme, or even more so, as whipet/deerhound. I'm not suggesing to put an 18" whippet over a 30" deerhound, but a good strong 22-23""ish whippet from a line known for size over a smaller type deerhound bitch of about 26"-28" from a working bred line that doesn't produce the huge ungainly types you often see. And as I've said, with it being a 1st x I think there would be more chance of having more of an even size amongst the pups. I know you could expect to get get a couple of pups at the extreme ends, but on the whole I think the majority would be of a tidy useful size, right, time for some breakfast lol Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,598
Yes, but there are quite a few whippet x salukis being bred, same thing, extremes, so why breed them? I'd much rather have a whip/deer than a whip/saluki Watch a vid on a whippet x saluki coursing a hare, floating over the plough, and your see why their bred,I toyed with getting one ,beginning of the year. roybo 2,873
I think what hot meat means shaaark Is the off spring if bred could throw all sizes which to be fair does happen For instance when you breed whippets In to a line at times, Quote Link to post

I get what you're, and H M, is saying if there was whippet on both sides somewhere along the line, anyway, just thinking 1 Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
Personaly,...I sometimes feel that folk pay too much heed to mathematical equations, percentages, etc,..making the creation of a roustabout hunting dog,..just that wee bit too complicated...
