Whippet X Deerhound

Recommended Posts

Anyone know of someone that works or owns this type? I would think a big whippet dog put to a fairly smallish deerhound bitch should throw some good pups. Just whippet and deerhound, no greyhound

Rather than try and put a pure whippet to a Deerhound,..we found it easier to use a big whippet (generally a Heavyweight, Scratch Dog) over a nice, well balanced Deerhound /Greyhound. At first there

I've put this on befor,,,but that bitch in my avatar was some bitch,,,whipp, grey,,,,over a deer, grey,,, although I only have the vendors word on the breeding,,,,mind not quite the same as a straight d

Personaly,...I sometimes feel that folk pay too much heed to mathematical equations, percentages, etc,..making the creation of a roustabout hunting dog,..just that wee bit too complicated...

I asked about this a while ago and didn't get much response.

I think the general consensus was that the litter could be terribly mixed - as often is the case when large breeds and small breeds are present.

My pup is out of a deer/grey x collie/grey dog over a deer/grey x whippet bitch and the litter was very mixed. One pup looked like a pure whippet, one threw just like a collie/grey, one threw like a whippet/grey and a couple threw just right - in my opinion anyway.

I was hoping for something about 25", good feet and coat, very fast with gears and ability to turn well, steady deerhound temperament, good nose and good stamina.

I think I've got what I wanted. Or at least we are getting there. She's almost 11 months old now and I'm more than happy so far.

What is your thinking behind the deerhound x whippet?

Simple really gaz, I like whippets and I like deerhounds, and I think a pup bred from the right parents, sizewise, would prove very useful. After all whip/greys have been around for years, and I think whip/deer would give the pups a better coat, and also good feet, plus both breeds have sound temperaments. And with only two breeds in the mix, I would've thought size would be a bit easier to predict, or rather, give you more even sized pups

Usually a 1st cross the litter is 'fairly' level it's when you go second generation that you or lurcher to lurcher when you get size big differences,

If that's what you like i'm sure they would be a decent as anything shaark

Also both being sighthounds it's a question whether there would be wastage as a smaller or larger dog would suit someone

Yeah roy, 1st x is what I mean, not whippet on both sides or whatever, and also what you say about wastage, I think we're on the same wavelength. If someone had a litter by say a 22" whippet dog out of say a 28" deerhound bitch, and both were sound useful workers, I'd be on my travels to look at the pups

Yea what I mean if their was a small 22" broken coated longdog it wouldn't be a waste,or a 27 " that would suit someone else ,

It's not like they wouldn't be able to run, just pick the pup that looks the biggest(or smaller) if that's what you are after.
