Every day i was on the river banks ,chicken farms ,farm barns etc ratting. then progressed onto rabbiting on the railway banks. Was,nt many people doing it then local to me so a few mates come and went .So mostly it was just me and the terriers,After that i recieved a ferret ,a ferret bag and ten nets. Then i become the farmers 2nd pest,,lol.i was getting permission on farms for rats .then got my first solo permission on a farm rabbiting.i was there most weekends .at 15 i got my first lurcher type mongrel.(butch),,thick as pig shit ,but was a very worthy apprentice for my gang.we had some great days ferreting ,ratting ..then came the home made lamp,,,but thats another story,,lol..well thats how i started out at 11 .25 years ago,,and still get the same buzz now that i did back then, cheers for reading ,

My hunting life started when my parent's followed the fox hounds, I always ended up with the terriers in the back of the hunt Land Rover. Then I had my first dog a Collie x Springer bitch. We went every where together mostly mooching about the local farms. Next it was 2 Ferret jills & a handful of nets. Didn't catch much but then a friend of my dad's took me out with him & used to let me take his Grew Gyp with me. Thankfully Gyp new a lot more about the job than I did & we started to catch a few. I have been hooked ever since! That was back in the 60's & I still have a couple of lurchers, a terrier & ferrets.

Got a terrier off me Grandad when I was 5/6...he worked old russel types mostly, but he bred his good bitch to a lakie/fell sort this time, and I got a black pup...

It was supposed to be a family pet lol big mistake....Barney was his name...he was hunting daft, and it wasnt long before we were putting bits and bobs in the bag... he sadly got killed by a car a couple of years later but he certainly got me started.

The next 'family pet' dog was a collie cur, he made old bones, was a decent moochers dog for rabbits and feather, and I soon added ferrets to the team and I was in business haha

Oh the fun of the pre-teen years..! I Remember how exciting it was just being out with the dogs doing whatever, ratching about, hunting (trying to), climbing trees, camping, exploring abandoned houses. I am still the same now haha

All the best

All started on my grand-parents farm with the terrier. Spot she was called a jack russel cross. Would go in the sheds on a night turn the light on and the fun would begin. What a good ratter she was. I got my first terrier and ferrets when i was fourteen and gone on from there.

You're not kidding mate, I still remember a farmer sneaking up on me and my mate when we were mooching with our cattys,

He scared the s**t out of us and even now 50 odd years later I can still hear his exact words. "i'LL HAVE YER EYEBALLS FOR DOGMEAT YE LITTLE SODS"

I bet it gave him a good laugh to see us jump 5 feet in the air and run for our lives, but at 7 or 8 years old I really though he'd do it if he caught us. lol

One of my earliest memory's is waking up in the front seat of my father car all on my own . I looked out the window and could see my father not far away jogging across the field with hes old rough coated lurcher when a hare jump out of the stubble and him slipping Dutch . Dutch caught the hare my father got back in the car and said " did you see that son ? " I was four lol after that ?" When I think back there's loads of story's I could tell but I'll save them for another day !

Not really a dedicated hunter, but I was bought up around dogs and shooting, dad had a spaniel, a couple of terriers and a greyhound that wandered in the yard one day.

I got a dog that sticks with me at elven, she did everything I could have asked. She worked from the age of 11 till I was 22, then I went to uni.

Along side her we had a chiuahua/russell, shepherd, collie, spaniel collie's etc that all worked. I have never had anyone show me how, I just enjoyed working dogs- rats rabbit feather. The other dogs died young in accidents, looking back I could have done better.

Along side this I progressed through air rifles and shotguns, the original dog worked with all of this. A job on a chicken farm gave me masses of ratting age 14 through 19.

A few years gap and I am not sure whether I miss working dogs or my care free days!

But I still want a lurcher, something my dad wouldn't allow as they were 'poachers dogs', I still have the connection and a lot or permissions, I am just easing myself in and putting a lot of thought as to what I want from a lurcher. It is weird having this much information available, forums were not about when I was really keen.
