let'sshoot 11
Yes, always a bank, I reload and fmjs are for free compared to expanding Thanks Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
how about using fmjs in the 223 for head shot rabbits, just as humane as an air rifle pellet, more accurate than an air rifle, capable of much longer shots - great practice and no meat damage. Thanks   Sorry, but that is the first time I have heard a 1000ft lb PLUS FMJ described as "just as humane as an air rifle pellet" 3 Quote Link to post
bbs 26
.22 hornet or .222 or .17rem would be my choice, the first two are reasonably quiet, the .17 will let you shoot foxes a little bit further and is one deadly flat shooting round, to be honest with a nv set up you are not going to be shooting foxes @300 yards probably more like -150 yards so a hornet will do all you want at that distance, personally I would go for the .222 super accurate, dead easy to reload for, cheap rifles, plenty of ammo available, quiet (in cf terms) and will drop foxes @ 250 yards all day (or night in your case) a nice light CZ 527 with a PES end can will do the job nicely Hutchey [/quote. That's what I use on charlie and have shot out to 350 and stoped foxy dead I have the cz 527 with a t8 can and what a tool would recomend that to anye one ] Edited May 31, 2014 by bbs Quote Link to post
hutchey 147
Thought of the hornet but both my local RFD's say that stock ammo is poor. They also suggested 222 as being limited for ammo compared to 223 I need to go and see someone with a hornet and see if I can try it. Same for 222 and 223 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Hutchy I love the hornet mate, but unless you are going to reload for it, or can get a regular supply of 35gn vmax factory stuff I would leave it, most factory ammo is garbage. 1 Quote Link to post
rob reynolds uk 3
.204 is a faster round then the 22.250 and cheaper to load ..less powder and cheaper bullets ,less lead.. but just as deadly out to 500mtrs use 39grn bullets ...past 550 mtrs the 22.250 wins but only just..cant do with the 22lr buy a fac air rifle or get a hmr17 or the new magnum .17 3000fps .. Alsone 789
.204 is a faster round then the 22.250 Not out of the factory it isn't. Nothing to choose between them, literally a few FPS unless you compare bullet weights like for like, then the .22-250 is a heavier round for any given speed. So in any given bullet weight, the .22-250 is faster and has more energy. eg. 40gr 4,224ft/s vs 3,900 ft/s in favour of the .22-250 and 300ft lbs more energy. Can't comment on reloading. From the wiki (as fastest source): .22-250 Bullet weight/type Velocity Energy 40 gr (3 g) BT 4,224 ft/s (1,287 m/s) 1,585 ft·lbf (2,149 J) 50 gr (3 g) SP 3,945 ft/s (1,202 m/s) 1,728 ft·lbf (2,343 J) 55 gr (4 g) SP 3,786 ft/s (1,154 m/s) 1,751 ft·lbf (2,374 J) 60 gr (4 g) BT 3,580 ft/s (1,090 m/s) 1,708 ft·lbf (2,316 J) 64 gr (4 g) Power Point 3,500 ft/s (1,100 m/s) 1,741 ft·lbf (2,360 J) .204 Ruger: Ballistic performanceBullet weight/type Velocity Energy 32 gr (2 g) BT 4,225 ft/s (1,288 m/s) 1,268 ft·lbf (1,719 J) 40 gr (3 g) BT 3,900 ft/s (1,200 m/s) 1,351 ft·lbf (1,832 J) 45 gr (3 g) SP 3,625 ft/s (1,105 m/s) 1,313 ft·lbf (1,780 J) Not saying there aren't other advantages to the .204, but on velocity and energy, the .22-250 takes it. charlie caller 3,654
And just to add the .22-250 bucks the wind better, and you can shoot deer with it as well as foxes, which is a massive string to its bow, so to speak, if you have the chance of the odd Munty, cwd, or fancy a trip to Scotland on the roe, and there is a far far wider choice of bullets for the .224 calibre rifles.
