fireman 11,180
Few pics from some of the flights today,i picked up a new greenfinch cock the other day which has been hand reared and has lived in a cage in a flat so i'm not sure the chap knows he's a bird yet but he'll soon sort that out now he's living with some other ones and although i can hold a seed bowl and he'll sit on it to feed he's not yet used to me enough to feed out my hand. He's got a funny thing going on with his flight feathers as one side is white the other yellow,he's ment to be split for a few colours but i didn't know a bird could be split for more than two so feck knows and feck cares to be honest .He's just the start of a few years plan to have hand tame birds in all my flights and he'll help settle this years young un's,anyway i'll shut up and here's some pics. New Greenie cock Not the best bird in the greenie world but he'll look better in a few weeks when he's fitter and more of a bird. Nest of greenfinches. same chicks, pulled them out for a check over and all is well with them. 2 cinny 1 normal. Another greenie nest.,,notice she built next to the nest pan And some more greenies that fledged yesterday,1 lutino (it'll be a hen)1 normal. Now was that good?, ,well feast your eyes on these little treasures as i've saved the best till last and . 7 nuggets of pure native Bullfinch gold. and my other hen who's sat on 5 and that's as close as i'm going to her.

fireman 11,180
Nice one chaps and he's a funny thing Tuffty, like i say not a great example and no where near fit but he has hasn't he and he'll come to the door to meet me and i'm happy with him.Rex and Mule the hen with the 7 eggs hatched every one she sat on last year and is the mother to your bllie cock mule and they were by far the best parents of all my birds last year(well except for the ring puliing ) so fingers crossed there as good this year ,the hen on the 5 eggs in the nest pic laid a round but never sat so i put them under a goldie mule hen but there all clear so hopeflly this lot is full as i've seen him tread the hen so know there doing the deed

TUFFTY 1,484
Fireman, that greenfinch. The first picture of him (the greenfinch side) he looks like a greenfinch. But the otherside in the second picture he obviously has them white bars, But hes rump is a sort of browny colour like the hawfinch has. Look this aint even my bird and im getting excited about it lol Fireman what you going to breed him with? I know what I would do lol
fireman 11,180
He's been in a cage all his life so that's why i think he has a sort of stubby tail,it's like it hasn't fully grown out or something doesn't it ?,and as you can see in the wing bars the feathers aren't tight like they should be type thing but exercise and good food should see him at least improve a bit and if not now when he next moults. What's he going with?,he's in with 2 greenie hens who have just had a first round with a different cock and when i first put him in there he didn't know what to make of the others (hence the don't know he's a bird yet )and he was even a little scared of them, well it's funny what a couple of females can do to the old inbuilt instincts and as i'm typing this he's sat in between a silver and a cinny greenfinch hen and the silver hen is well on his case as her chicks have fledged now so she'll be wanting to going down again, lets hope he's up for it but if he doesn't produce with them it's not the end of the world as i've produced a good few greenfinches allready this year.

gnasher16 30,686
Fireman you see the way that Greenie has nested in your conifer rather than the nestpan......was you tempted at all to break the nest up in the hope they build one in the pan or not ?........i noticed one of my Canaries doing that a few weeks ago and probably wrongly broke it up in the hope they would nest in a nestpan,i just didnt trust the spot it was being built it just seemed a bit brittle to me.........anyway ive been away the last few weeks and got back to a couple of eggs in a perfectly built nest in the EXACT same spot where id broke the other one up .......its taught me to just keep my nose out of things, they know best By the way great pictures as usual. fireman 11,180
Hello Gnasher, hope you had a good trip away and seen the grand bit of news about "Harry's super hoops" ? . But as for breaking nests yes i was tempted but will really only break a nest if the hen has built it so poorly eggs fall through it or roll out of it,i did it earlier in the year with a first time building greenie hen and the next one she built she reared in so was worth doing it.These hens know better than us what they want and we can only really help and there is a way of getting them nest where you want them to but that means taking all other cover and nesting chances out and i hate seeing really empty flights with just a few perches and a nest bowl with a few stigs around it,they look empty boring and imo are empty and boring for the birds as well and i'll take the risk i take with them nesting where they want and not where i just want them to . Good luck with the eggs and with the other birds this wet cold spell were having it will slow them down a bit so don't worry if any aren't up to much there'll get going again when it warms up again,it's messing with my lot but one of those grim and bear it times. gnasher16 30,686
Great result that mate i was rooting for them.....of all the players for it to fall to id stake my life on Bobby Zamora he took a lot of stick at West Ham but never any doubt about his class....hopefully a few quid spent in the summer and its onwards and upwards. I was told although its normal for natives to build a nest outside a pan its quite rare for canaries to.....but yes lesson learned there .....my lot only seem to be laying 2 eggs i dont know why that is.....nice healthy chicks but only 2 eggs per round any ideas ? fireman 11,180
I don't really know how to go about increasing egg production as it were but i do know one thing,i'd rather have only 2 eggs that hatch than 7 laid and left
