Lewdan 17
Nearly all the fox I shoot are around 100 to150 yds, so for that reason sold my .223 and I now use my .22k hornet every time.. cracking round, cheap to reload, lightweight to carry and very quiet when moderated. Very underrated round energy is about 750 ft / lbs much much more that hmr. LD Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
How much cheaper than a .223 is it lewdan? Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
Only about a £1 a box on top brand off the shelf ammo. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
You need to reload it to see a benefit, it only uses a whiff of powder, so a tub lasts for ages. Quote Link to post
slipper 116
Is there a lot of difference between the 22k hornet and the standard 22 hornet? Is the reloading gear the same etc Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Watch ".22LR, .22WMR, .17HMR, .22 hornet comparison - BU" on YouTube .22LR, .22WMR, .17HMR, .22 hornet comparison - BU: Here you go chris a little comparison video Quote Link to post
slipper 116
That was interesting mate, looking at the reloading side of things, the case of the 22 hornet looks quite thin, are cases easy to come by because it doesn't look like you can reload them more than a few times Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Not sure Chris but give Mike Norris a call and see if he supplys the cases. Quote Link to post
Lewdan 17
hi mate, if you buy factory ammo then the hornet is not cheap to run in fact about the same as .223. but when it comes to reloading the hornet takes literally half the powder of a .223 and this is where you gain!! the choice between the hornet and .223 for fox is probably based on the conditions of use, if your permissions have huge fields which allow foxes to be shot safely at greater distances say 300 yds then the 223 is the tool for the job, but if like my permissions fields are 150yds max then the hornet has more than enough grunt and is much quieter imo.. As I have said I have used both calibres and shot many fox with both and no foxes complained the same goes for rabbits... the other thing is that shots over 200yds at night look a very long way you will need a good scope---and that's another headache !!! Cheers LD Quote Link to post
Lewdan 17
THE .22K hornet case is different to the standard hornet in as much that it has a defined shoulder similar to all other centre fire calibres, not the long taper of the standard hornet. the case can hold more powder , and the reloading dies are different... the K hornet can fire a standard hornet round with no problem, and when fired the case is formed into K configuration.. the standard hornet rifle cannot fire a K round.. charlie caller 3,654
That was interesting mate, looking at the reloading side of things, the case of the 22 hornet looks quite thin, are cases easy to come by because it doesn't look like you can reload them more than a few times I have had ten reloads out of one batch of cases, and probably could have got more, but chucked em as I had tons of brass, the secret to reloading a hornet is flare the case mouth (Lee universal flare tool) and crimping the bullet in place (Lee factory crimp die) these two simple and cheap operations will shrink your groups to tiny cloverleafs, assuming of course you have everything else right, fantastic little round the hornet, what that video demonstrates is how poxy most factory ammo is in .22 hornet, as the guy explained the ammo companies (Hornady excepted) load it to very low pressure to cater for year old rifles, so it is one round that I say reloading is a must for, just like .303 British. dadioles 68
Just ask for 'any other lawful quarry' on your licence and then it is up to you if you use your .22lr or .17hmr against fox. It is then perfectly legal. Without AOLQ or specific mention of Fox you are in a grey untested area of law and that is not a comfortable place to be. Most forces will not allow either round as 'good reason' based on fox. 'Good reason' for either round is for vermin control. In appropriate circumstances both calibres are excellent for fox. Ask for a fox condition against either calibre and you may be turned down. AOLQ is being used widely on the new style certificates. Quote Link to post
