Brace For The Lad

Recommended Posts

After all the rain of yesterday it finally gave out to give a sunny evening and we took the opportunity to get out with the rifle .Went to a place where id recently seen a young buck whilst out with the dogs .Bit breezy but at least i knew which way to go round .The corn had been recently sprayed i think as we could smell a hint of something as we brushed through it so no deer at this end but an opportunity to

check a few earths nearby to see what was using them and sure enough cubs which will have to go .

Persevered up to the set aside where theres proper long grass ,4 ft or so .As we approached this area a scan with bins revealed nothing .Glancing round a tree however revealed a young buck sat in tight to the hedge to our left in a bit shorter grass .He was looking away so we were able to shimmy out into the field and get comfy for the wait til he got up.Time went on seeming like ages as it does so i barked ,no response,i whistled ,no response ,i waved the sticks in the air ,no response ,shook a nearby branch ,no response ,even threw my jacket in the air ,still no response .We were only 50yd away mind so i told George to stand up slowly, rifle on sticks and see what happened ,nothing ,so i stood up too ,the sight of which was too much and he jumped to his feet and turned to face us .Whispered to George neck shot and down he went .

Still plenty of light so onward over the road to another spot .There is a cracking meadow here bordered by a wood and a banking from an old quarry and it was this meadow we stalked toward .As we neared i could see a buck and doe out down the far end ,maybe 150 yds away feeding on the buttercups.Ive been caught out here before by deer just around the corner so carefully took a look and sure enough another buck and doe with a better buck here too.We were next to the banking here so i decided to crawl up it to crawl along the top for better sighting ,me infont with the rifle .we could see the whole field from here and revealed 3 more deer near the far wood unseen at ground level ,a buck and two does .Looked like a very good buck but a long way off .The buck we had in mind was grazing away a bit lead b y his doe so we had to get a busy on to get along the top for a shot .Caught up level with him .A few second to get our breath back and i eased the bipod out at which the bucks head went up looking straight in our direction.Doubt if he saw much as we were in amoungst some tall cowparsley .He was proper switched on though and ran a bit towards us getting to within 40 yds at one time ,the doe fed unconcerned .He settled down to go back to the doe, allowing us a breather and to ready George for a sitting shot off high pod .He was about 120 now and broadside so instructions were given, shot squeezed off and he ran maybe 10 yds before collapsing dead .Very proud dad ,handshake and even a little hug much to his disgust lol.We watched the doe as she looked around for him using here as a guide to pin point him as she jumped back at the smell of blood .making ourselves known on the skyline ,the field emptied and we made our way to the buck ,a nice 6 pointer ,Georges first and his 5th deer .Dosent get any better than this .Finished gralloch when the heavens opened from what had been threatening in the distance .
