Stalk Or A Cast ?

Recommended Posts

Went out last night for a stalk as there is a single antlered buck I need to catch up with .....stopped of at the river and saw a few fish moving so decided that the buck will still be there tomorrow but the salmon might not sop headed back and picked up the single hander and all the gear and went for a cast ....went through the pool and never got a touch ...just as I was about to head down stream I heard the splash of a fish behind me ...went back to the top of the pool and put out a short line across a lie I know about and fourth cast with the wee black francis again I was in .

Another well made fish of about 14 pound ....left my net in the car so had to beach it ..not easy on the wee rod and a decent fish ....returned to continue his journey .

Thats a nice stretch of river your fishing there. I would like to get your opinion on something I have thought about for the last few years. Do you think it would be a good practice if every female fish had to be returned to the water condition permitting?

The reason I ask is that you have just returned that male fish, yet a male parr can inseminate a female's eggs. But the eggs have to be spawned by an adult female. So if you wanted a fish for the table would it be a good practice to take only males where they can be positively identified?

Its a crakin beat Tiercel first beat on the North Esk so fish straight of the tide and every pool is fly water

I strive to return all fish but a fish that has swallowed the fly and is bleeding at the gills will not return so whether it is a cock or hen I will keep it .

We as fishermen have to try and do everything possible to try and help the salmon numbers as everything from polution over fishing in Greenland and here & predation has dwindled salmon numbers .

The owner of our beat Martin Stansfield who I describe as an old man with young mans ideas started a campaign 3 years ago called smolt shepherding where we applied for a cull on saw bills during the smolt run ...once we had reached the cull quota we kept the birds of the river by gas guns and patroling the river now the birds are that spooked that even dog walkers and fishermen are keeping them of the river .thus giving the smolt a chance to reach the sea .

last year I shot a merganser that spewed up a parr when the dog retrieved it ...we wieghed the parr and it was 7.8 gr now these birds they recon eat a minimum of 300gr of fish daily so do the maths that is alot of young fish being killed daily and it you have say 100 of these birds on your system that is frightening .

All the other scottish river systems are watching this closely to see the results and if early results are anything to go buy last year I have never see so much young stuff in the river with some of the best finnock I have ever seen in 30 years of being on the river and speaking to the nets men there a big numbers of sea trout in this year ...this is the best spring run of fish I seen for a long time we are just starting to see the grilse appear and it will be interesting to see if we get a good run of these one sea wintered fish cause that shows that the smolt sheperding is working which imo has to work and time will tell that if we see the salmon numbers increase that the smolt shepherding will be undertaken by all rivers in Scotland

Mik,

That approach is a very sensible solution to an on going problem. We have the same problem here in Wales. even around 20 years ago there were big flocks of Mergansers on the upper reaches of the Towy and some of it's main tributaries. One in particular the Cothie has in the upper reaches wide fields and meadows that it runs through, lower down the river it runs very fast through deep gorges and steep wooded valley's the upper reaches I used to fish in the night for sea trout and as it was getting dark you would see flocks of mergansers coming down the river going to their roost on a lake lower down the valley.

As you say the amount of parr that the mergansers take must be colossal. The runs of Sewin have dropped off to next to nothing on these rivers, what I cannot work out is how modern is this problem? Or is it an age old problem that used to be controlled?
