Digging In Clay

Recommended Posts

Been digging in alot of very thick heavy clay lately. Do any of you have good tips for digging in thick clay, both wet and dry? It's clumping on my shovel and very hard to get the shovel through.

Dip the spade in a bucket of water every spade full.

Lol,look well going across the land with diging tools terriers and a bucket of water.

Use your brain fatman

i find the best thing to do is stand there point to were you got the mark and say to the apprentice DIG THERE SON and offer words of encouragement when he starts moaning about sticky grey clay

wall paper scrapper for takeing it of shovel

is real thick clay i used a proper heavy fork.. and it comes out like cheese! the worst thing about clay for me is it sticking to your boots!

On the sticky ones always stuck the grafter in the ground and when it needs it give your shovel a tap as your throwing it out, better if your mate is paying attention & has a hand on the grafter. Can make good progress as it can come out like I imagine they cut peat. Just a pain when it rains....

you guys are way better than me when i dig in sticky clay i end up covered in the stuff. boots twice the size spade hands face covered in the slippery stuff. slipping and sliding and usually end up arse over tit. its easier to get on the shovel than it is to get off. i usually end up looking like the fcuking swamp monster. and thats just at my work. and the hacks i get, dont get me started on the hacks.. :icon_eek::icon_eek: . foxdropper touched on the subject of coat. i had a really rough coated dog years ago that got into real trouble a couple of times in this type of wet clay and couldnt move forward or back he was that badly binded with clay. both times he ended up needing a haircut. it also chilled him quite bad. funny you dont hear of the coat type discussed more often
