Mk1/mk2

Recommended Posts

That's right, original grey box = mk1, new shape (orange) = mk3, and new shape (grey) = mk2. All I've read about the mk2 has been negative. Some people prefer the old mk1, whereas the more techy types are fine with the mk3.

However, there is an exception to the rule. I have a grey box (mk1) which I bought as new nearly 30 years ago (when in my teens), and it has Mk 2 printed on the original depth wheel sticker. This is probably the type that you're bidding on. I can only assume that Deben slightly changed the original mk1 in some small way and decided to mark it internally on the depth wheel as mk2, maybe only for Deben's own identification purposes. I guess that soon after they decided to go for the new design (also grey) and ended up calling the new design the mk2 also. If they had called the new shape grey locator the mk3 instead, then it would have been confusing, as most people would not have been aware of the updated version of the old grey box. Of course, some of this is speculation, but I can say for sure that my old grey box has mk2 printed on the original wheel sticker and it's not the new shape mk2.

Thank you Paulus and The One. I've seen several different designs on the front of the old grey boxes, but I didn't realise they were all different internally. I guess certain components were updated periodically, hence 11 versions of the original mk1 design. Anyway, this probably explains why someone was selling a mk1 box on fleabay but calling it a mk2.
