Rez 4,961
Hi all. I've ordered a v-Mach tuning jobby from mr pope today and plan on fitting it myself. I have read and watched much on YouTube about it and I'm happy, at the moment with the process. Naturally I hear a lot about them running a tad hot within the rifles when they settle in and wondered how many preload washers I should start with when re building the rifle..? I'd like it to settle @ 11.2-5 ish and ideally would love to get it right first time. I'm fitting it to my 98 btw in .177. I see that most use two or three. Is it the more you use the less fpe? Thanks in advance. Quote Link to post
treecreeper 1,136
I didn't use any when i did my 97. its shoots around 11.5ft lb with superdomes and a 5fps spread over 15 shots Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
What made you make the decision not to use any can I ask? Edited May 20, 2014 by Rez Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
When i did my hw97 .177 it was over 12 with no washers. Got the spring shortened and then it was ok. Try it with none at first and see how it goes its easy enough to put a couple in if its too low powered. I like my guns between 10.5-11.4 ish dont like them too close to 12 incase a different pellet would possibly push them over 12 Quote Link to post

andy97 209
id run it first off about 10.5 10.8 if it gets there with no washers even better if not ut one in and try again you have to remember soon as it all beds in properly the rise abit on the fps so you should end up at about 11.2 to 11.4ish also good thing about springers there pretty consistent Edited May 21, 2014 by andy97 Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
Have you done it before andy? How would I know when you say run it off 10.5 10.8 without rebuilding it first? I was told today at the hft club that the v-Mach springs can be a bit large and should always be cut down, naturally with no experience with the cutting of springs correctly, how do I know how much to take off? It's a bit of a mine field the art of fitting/tuning the internals of a HW from what I have heard.. Everyone's got a better way, and I don't mean you andy at all, Ive got lots of ideas of what to do, but I guess the experience of doing it myself will only keep me happy, but again, I'll of born a new opinion. I did actually shoot one today tuned by dave wall in Sheffield and I hear he has his own way of doing things too... It was lovely though, not even my rifle and groups were nice. Has anyone used a v-Mach kits with a hw98 @ .177? I'll use that as a guide. Thanks in advance. Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
There is a vid on YouTube on how to cut and finish a spring but don't go chopping anything off your new spring until you've tried it as it is. No option but to re-assemble each time to test, (you'll soon get to be a dab hand at it ). Same goes for spacing washers. I'm just doing my new HW99S which was only doing 9 1/2 lbs when tested. Without a kit I made 'top hat' by modifying a water pipe insert, also fitted a plastic piston sleeve. Then I thought I might need a spacing washer - a real DIY job - piece of plastic sewage pipe, heated and flattened, drilled and cut to size and it fitted a treat. Don't know if it's worked yet as I dropped a small part under my bench and need to search for it in the morning ! A gunsmith friend told me the best place to dismantle a rifle was in a totally empty room - so you can find the bits that fly out ! Just hope when it put it on the chrono it doesn't come out at 14lbs or something daft ! 2 Quote Link to post

Rez 4,961
Hi all. Just a quick update that I've successfully installed a v-Mach kit this morning into my 98. It's a flaming miricale that I've managed it but took me time, cleaned, lubed up, followed instructions and it's worked out for the damn better I must say. No twang, smoother cocking, 1 finger kinda thing, more of a 'nudge' on recoil too. I've ended up placing three pre load washers in, now running at a super 11.3, which I'll have to watch when it all settles in. To all those that haven't yet, or are indeed contemplating a kit, do it. Whatever kit you choose, it'll make a sound rifle even better. 2 Quote Link to post
