Tiercel 6,986
I have been mulling over an idea I had a while ago for a new to me type of net. It will be a bugger to knit and until I try and make one I don't even know if it's possible. It will be a sort of cross between a trammel and a normal long net. Because of the procedure involved in knitting a net like this I cannot work out before hand how this net will sit when rigged on lines. If what I am thinking is correct and it is a big IF, the net should be able to be tied in every 18" without losing any catching power. That said I can already envisage some problems that might make the net a white elephant. Wind being the biggest of the problems, although I think that it may be possible to work around that QED. I will be starting it tomorrow, may even ending it tomorrow as well if it is too bad to knit. TC Edited May 17, 2014 by tiercel 1 Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
Well I have started it this morning I am only going to do a rigged yard to see what it looks like on lines. I have come up against one problem already that I had not thought about. It's not a major problem but it will take time to work around it. TC Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
Well I finished the rigged yard and set it up. The dimensions need to be changed but the principle seems to work. The net is knitted in the same basic way as a long net with a few modifications. Front view. Rear view. The rear view shows off the pockets in the net better than the front view. The pattern needs to be modified to get deeper pockets but apart from that I am pleased how it is developing. They would make great little stop nets set on quick set poles. TC 5 Quote Link to post

TC have you put extra meshs in parts to create the pockets?.. i cant see the trammel part in the net but it looks like the start of a string vest for rab c nesbits wife 3 Quote Link to post
smithie 2,443
what was the verdict? is it to be anygood or was the idea scrapped? Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
what was the verdict? is it to be anygood or was the idea scrapped? I tried another pattern but the outcome was not much different to the one above. I have another pattern in mind I will see how that works out and see which one I will go with. A trammel works on the principle that each square is like a small purse net, this net works on the same principle but instead of having separate outer walls the walls are knitted into the mesh of the net. I would be interested to see how these turn out as a lot of my ferreting jobs are on my own and a net such as these would be a very handy tool in my bag ....... Quote Link to post

TC having never used a trammel im having to imagine the working, i assume bagging pulls from above, the left and the right in a standard trammel. if you have a fixed trammel do you stich extra net in? would you be relying on the head going through the mesh if not having extra bag as less tangle?.. im intrested and look forward to seeing the end results Quote Link to post

I would not make a full size net of all three of the patterns just the one that came closest or matched my original idea of having a net of 2ft high maximum, with deep pockets in the net knitted as a single sheet. It would be the winter before I could field test it, but if some kind soul who had to ferret through the summer could help with the testing that would be a bonus. Smithie, A trammel works as you stated by the rabbit hitting the net and pulling the slack meshes to make a pocket in which it gets enmeshed in, this net has those pockets already there. Whether it will work in practice is yet to be seen. TC Quote Link to post
