Just got my first terrier beddyxlakeland hes 10 weeks at the moment what would be the best age for his first rat? Have i chosen a decent breed for ratting? And just any general tips would be great! Hot Meat 3,109 Posted May 17, 2014 Report Share Posted May 17, 2014 It's as easy as taking the young dog, not too young around where you think there are gonna be rats, if he shows any intrest in there holes then bolt them or dig them out for him, it's a shortcut to get it out with ratting dogs, but any terrier worth a fcuk should figure it out even on it's own Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Personally, I compete on a chicken farm with the owner's dog, and I'm still numbers up on her. Just make sure you have a good vet and explain that your neighbour has had their dog bitten by a rat, so you'd like to make sure the little'n has their jabs, incase of the same thing. Make sure you don't let them eat the rat. Farm rats will be exposed to poison. If you let your dog eat them, or get into the habit of eating them, you could potentially be risking secondary poisoning. Be really careful of this.
