Gaz_1989 9,539
Lordy, fella put a pic up celebrating his pups and every holier than thou expert on puppy rearing see an opportunity to blow their own trumpet . Recon he was using Weetabix as an introduction to solids rather than a permanent diet so cant see what the fuss was about . But since we have so many experts Ive one question for all you dieticians what did you feed your babies, human, for their first few meals ??????? that's exactly what i am doing mate Just a quick reminder before you answer the digestive abilities of humans and dogs are very similar, dogs arent wolves any more than we are cave men .Dogs arent true carnivores like say a cat, basically they are adapted to a mixed diet including starches Axelsson E. et al, The genomic signature of dog domestication reveals adaptation to a starch-rich diet, Nature, 2013 Jan 23, doi: 10.1038/nature11837, Science for Life Laboratory, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology, Uppsala University, 75237 Uppsala, Sweden The idea of carnivores etc is a man made label system that doesnt fit to well to reality. Think more of a continuum with obligate carnivore like cats at one end and ruminants like cows at the other. Most things fall somewhere between these two extremes, monogastrics. Even then they are not fixed at their place but able to move along the line to deal with variable food availability. Consider an Inuit living on a meat based diet in the Artic-circle compared to an arable farmer group such as the Aztecs, both are humans yet one could be called a carnivore and one a herbivore but in truth neither label fits their digestive, evolutionary abilities does it? Wolves had similar abilities which is why they made such a good partnership with ourselves in the first place. Then our pressure on their evolution has enhanced this to bring them ever closer to ourselves. The result dogs are now able to digest and do well on a very catholic diet, carbs wont be passed through but digested and form a valuable part of balanced diet. So if someone wants to give their pups some cereal seems just fine to me. HOWEVER dogs need meat to survive and flourish ... They couldn't live in the wild on grains and fruits alone ... Also if I put a bowl of cereal on the floor next to a bowl of fresh meat and led a hundred dogs one at a time to the bowls I know what I would put my money on to be the empty bowl every time .......... He WAS going to introduce meat at a later stage. HOWEVER thousands of dogs in the UK survive, flourish, thrive and compete at various tasks which have never seen meat in their lives. You know my thoughts on feeding but it's just my preference. Let's not get blind to the reality that dogs do just fine on dry food, cereals, starchy diets. And they do thrive. f**k me gaz are you just trying to say the opposite to everything I post ? I was talking about dogs in the wild thriving and that they wouldn't if they only had grains and fruits to eat .. Also how many dogs die each year in the uk through cancer related illness that has been linked to dry food ... You don't hear of dogs dying from cancers that is linked to fresh meat ... If your such a champion of dry foods why do you keep rolling out your bowl full,of meat diet picture at every chance you get ...your last sentence says it all dogs do fine on dry food ... Well I want mine to do more than just fine ... At the end of the day the man can feed his dogs what he likes and I never joined this debate to tell him he was doing anything wrong ... I was merely pointing out that a puppy will do better weaned on meat rather than cereal ....... I haven't said the opposite at all. I feed similarly to how you feed. Because I also want to feed them better than "just ok". But people on this thread are going on like feeding weetabix is going to have a negative effect on the dogs health. Them pups will be sound and we all know it. Dogs in the wild can and have thrived on much worse than fresh fruit, veg and grains. Of course meat would be better. Nobody is disputing that. 11 pages about weetabix. Beats my 10 pages about a collar 2 Link to post
skycat 6,173
I certainly noticed a difference in weaning age pups when I started feeding raw meat to wean them on to. Years ago I did like everyone: soaked puppy food or wheatabix, but starting them on raw whole gutted rabbit to suck on as soon as they started looking for food, usually about 3 weeks, then finely minced chicken, then beef by 5 weeks, their coats were much shinier, they had better bone (as in thicker stronger legs), and they never did sloppy yellow shit like pups weaned on to cereals. Also, pups weaned on to cereals nearly always have bigger bellies: they need to eat more to get the goodness they'd find in a much smaller quantity of meat. Classic big bellies and bandy hind legs, and I've bought in pups that had been well wormed but looked badly in need of worming with staring coats and pot bellies because they'd been reared on cereal based complete foods. I'll always wean straight on to meat. 3 Link to post
