lamping lad 96
Hi everyone, Just recently my "breeding project" seems to just be giving me grief. I have only three pairs of canaries, one hen had three chicks nice strong healthy chicks and they just started getting their wing feathers, came out In the morning and they were all dead? And then my other hen had 1 chick came out yesterday and was also dead. Can anyone give me a few pointers as this is horrible. Thank you
Hot Meat 3,109
Is there spare nest pans in there aswell?? Your gonna gave to watch an see what's happening or you'll never know for sure, but sounds like one of the birds is the suspect and maybe trying to clear chicks out to nest in order to nest or go have second clutch depending on what bird it is Edited May 14, 2014 by Hot Meat
fireman 10,993
Could well be a frustrated cock bird wanting the hen to go again, you do get the odd chick die that is life but 3 with wing feathers is a big age to just die like that.Is there any black spots on the chicks bellies or anything else visual on the chicks that could help us more?.

taz2010 1,297
you aint got mite have ya mate just check nests where chicks were or could be cock forcing hen to go back to nest, and she ends up leaving them, use just the one nest pan check thoroughly for mite. When hen lays again keep a good eye on them if cock starts chasing or treading her whilst on chicks remove him mate
Hot Meat 3,109
Sounds like mite if they in cages and have spare pans. Don't take the little fookers long to suck chicks dry

francolin 449
mite can be hard to spot ,look under nest felts for small spots and rub ya thumb over em they will squash redish colour,if you got mite as said they soon weaken chicks good luck Edited May 15, 2014 by francolin
