charlie caller 3,654
Deadly I have a mate who used to do all the council culling back in the 80s, he used a .22-250 on red stags, says he never had a runner. Quote Link to post

TheRealChuckNorris 42
Legal minnimum cal is 243 un les shooting row and muntjac on the boders with scotland Bit wide of the mark there sir. It's not straightforward to just say it's .243 or bigger - more factors come in to play, especially when you break it down into different species and locations. In Ireland (where the OP is). It's a minimum of .220 with a 55 grain bullet. In England...(For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer only) - a rifle with a minimum calibre of not less than .220 inches and muzzle energy of not less than 1000 foot pounds and a bullet weight of not less than 50 grains may be used. For all deer of any species – a minimum calibre of .240 and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement. In Scotland...(For roe deer) bullet weight of at least 50 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds. For all deer of any species – the bullet must weigh at least 100 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,750 foot pounds. 3 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Spot on there Chuck, if the op is shooting Muntjac, cwd, or roe in scotland only, a .22-250 will be a splendid choice 1 Quote Link to post

Totally agree, quality calibre. Fay - get cracking on the gun sites and find yourself a good one. 1 Quote Link to post

.338winmag 78
I'd stick with the 6mm 243 er bigger if was buying a deer hunting rifle ,we use 22-250 for small varmits mostly here lol ,but if i was going to purchase one i'd definately be looking to some premium hunting bullets for it an not a light varmint type round ,like for example nosler partitions come to mind or me be Barnes bullets . 1 Quote Link to post

sikastag_1 689
Love my 22-250 mate I've shot a lot of roe with it aswell as foxes and its a brilliant round I've found myself in the look out for a 270 though for shooting bigger deer especially red which is a bit of a pain in the arse but I still won't be getting rid of my 22-250 love it, so if your only wanting it for foxes and the smaller deer species there's no other calibre I'd look at tbh. 1 Quote Link to post
