Mustelid 143
I've read quite a bit on here about the merits of pointers and how they are commonly crossed with Labradors to produce all round dogs for the shooting field. My question is has anyone seen/bred/worked a pointer cross collie? A good friend of mine is keen to experiment with this type of dog as it could be argued that they have a similar hunting style. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed. 1 Quote Link to post
jennym 39
What was the collie pointer being used for, i.e beating? or walked up? I was at a shoot a few years ago and a gun had 2 collie spaniel crosses, he swore by them, they were quite strange looking but seemed to do the job. I'm not convinced by the plan of using collie instead of lab to cross with the pointer? What would the collie bring into the cross that a lab wouldn't? I'm interested to hear more but that's just my tuppence worth. Coincidently my lurcher is pointer x greyhound x collie x greyhound and I think its a great cross. What I mean though is that the collie is a tried and tested element of a lurcher but not sure about in a gundog? All the best Jenny Quote Link to post
Mustelid 143
Thanks for the reply Jenny. The idea wouldn't be to produce a purpose bred Gundog, but a general mooching/hunting/ferreting type of dog. Collies will 'point' game so to speak so perhaps a mix of collie and pointer would produce a hunting companion with good qualities, yet smaller than a pointer. Quote Link to post
jennym 39
Didn't know that collies could point game, be interesting to see how the cross works out, keep us posted Quote Link to post
Moorman 1 1,361
I have always thought that this could be a good cross. As the Collies herding instinct is developed from a hunting instinct and as you say they do point. Also they are very tractable so could be trained to a high standard and they love to retrieve. It would definitely be a worthy cross to try. Mustelid 143
The best dog I've seen of any breed or cross was a border collie. This dog did everything! If I could guarantee getting one half as useful I would have one. As an all round hunting compaion I think they would fut the bill. The difficult part would be finding one. Quote Link to post

stroller 341
It all depends on the dogs used I suppose. I personally think working type collies should never be kept purely as pets as they develop neurosis and become neurotic ball chasers etc. So adding a working collie to a working pointer the pups will definitely need a job as they will be full on physically and mentally demanding dogs. it would be an interesting cross Quote Link to post

I agree that it depends on the parent stock as well as I've seen some bad pointer x lab as well as good. Quote Link to post
