Recommended Posts

ive known borders to go at 12mts, i find that each and every one is different, some take longer to go, but if i was you i wouldnt try them at 8mts far to young, if they meet summut it could put them off for good, you say you have just got them, get to no them and them to no you, take um out bushing and all that, maybe let them watch a dig or 2 in afew months time, and dont for get to put a collar on, as has been said there just pups , if you dont mind me asking why did you choose borders,

make an artificial earth and get a fox brush on a peice of string, use a ferret to get the string through then tease the pup with the brush and slowly pull it through letting the pup follow works for me :)

i know :censored: all about working terriers but i do have a question.

mr1 do you not belive that allowing a pup to watch an older dog will help to show the pup even if only a little bit what to do?

im not saying that if you do let the pup do this then it will turn it into a worker because that would mean if i watched ricky hatton fight i could get in the ring and win a title(and thats just silly)

as for your comment about the bitch learning to piss like a dog  although funny its not realy the same thing at all is it.

better make it clear im not trying to get into an argument cos like i said i know :censored: all about working terriers, just intrested to know your full veiw on what a pup can pick up from watching an older dog

Hello Hastings and all the so called novice lads/girls, do not take to heart my comments if you are new to the game, we all have to learn and advice should be welcomed and you or me are never to old to learn, however, the problem with this site is there are to many idiots trying to give advice and that will do the new comers more harm. There are also to many show orientated people on here as well as antis. Its good to be a know it all, if you are a nice sympathetic kniow it all and you show empathy to the new starters, but if you are a know it all arrogant arse hole, your no good to anyone, in my opinion.

Both Frank and me will offer our advice which is advice through experience, we are not teachers and certainly not the best, well Frank thinks he is the best! But since joining the site, rightly or wrongly both our aims were to expose the phonies and liars for the benefit of firstly the working terrier (all breeds) and secondly the new commers to our sport.

Some times the language and blunt comments can seem offending, sorry to all who are offended by the language but the context I do not apologise for, if it offends then it is because in my eyes you are not genuine dog men/women

To clarify Franks comments, hes a sleep, pissed last night, had 2 10ft digs in the ale tent to a Russell that goes back to Trump! He was with Middleton, Chapman, Mousley, Jonesy and Cloughie, all of them ended up fighting over whose dog s wwent back to Trump, mad, the lot of them!

Getting a young terrier out is of the utnmost importance, from getting it used to the vehicle, the boxes, hounds, horses etc, its a package of getting the terrier accustomed to his/her future working liife, its called socialising it to its future environment, it all helps. However, work is in the terriers blood, neither me or you or anyone can put it there, most working terriers need to be held back for their own good, not encouraged, its natural, in their blood to work and this is where it becomes patheticly harder for the persons whose terriers have inferior blood in them because of past breeding methods to get them going.

After the socialising period is over, peg the terrier out, he/she will learn from being pegged out and taking in the atmosphere. Let the terrier sniff the entrance, hopefully it will show an inclination it wants to go. Leave it pegged out, dig your quarry, shoot the quarry, show the young terrier the carcase, preferably in the dig on its own, if a bit nervy at being lowered in to a deep dig show the carcase on top. My personal opinion is to allow this procedure to happen when the terrier that has been dug to has been removed. Start the youngster as you mean to go on, no dutch currage of another terrier present to wind it up, on its own.

After this only you can judge the maturity of your terrier, you should know your earths, their depth, stop ends etc, think for your terrier and guide it along steadily, bit like a boxer, dont oput them in with a world champion first fight.

Good luck
