Ian Jessup 2
which barrel first top or bottom what people think ? Quote Link to post
TheRealChuckNorris 42
Depends what I'm trying to hit, how far away it is and what chokes I have in there. Quote Link to post
andyf 144
Right: On an over under the choke barrel is the top, the open barrel the bottom. Likewise the Side by Side Right barrel open Left barrel choke. But of course multi-choke 'screw ins' trash all that and you can have what you like. But the standard is as above. Quote Link to post
delswal 3,819
If the chokes in the bottom barrel are the same as the top one , it does not matter which one you fire first, as your point of aim will be the same anyway and they will be little or no difference in the shot pattern. The one 8,463
Thought with a o/u the top barrel was the open one ? as it usually fires first Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
The order doesn't really matter so long as open choke fires 1st (you're banking on shooting closest in with the 1st shot and the quarry turning away if missed and flying / running further away, although the bottom barrel is more suited to longer distance in theory as it fires higher so some will always choke the bottom tightest). I think the reason why some guns allow you to change the order is probably for clay shooting as then on a sporting range, you can change the firing order according to the stand without having to get the choke keys out. ie if 1 stand has pairs with the 1st bird closest and the 2nd furtherest away, but the next stand has the reverse, then it's easier to flick a switch than screw both chokes out in the field and replace them. SportingShooter 0
They're both roughly aligned to the same distance, Depends on the situation and what choke is in what barrel. If it's anything other than clays, I like it as bottom first. Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
They're both roughly aligned to the same distance, Yeah it's usally about 35-40yds isn't it? Beyond that they separate a little but if it makes any difference given the spread, I'm not sure. Theoretically as the bottom barrel shoots higher I believe it's supposed to compensate for the drop but I'm not sure there's enough of a difference tbh as the barrel is only about 1 inch lower than the top anyway. Could be urban myth! Quote Link to post
danw 1,748
I was told by nigel teauge (of teauge chokes) the bottom barrel first because it recoils straighter in to the shoulder than the top barrel so getting on to the next shot is quicker and the sight plain isn't obstructed by the rising barrels but that probably applies more to competition shooters than us mere mortals. 1 Quote Link to post

Either for yourself, or if your lucky/lazy enough to have a stuffer. Quote Link to post
