Just a quick point to add to that message. If you do for a tx, hw77 or a 97 or something like that, you are getting a real quality accurate hunting tool not just a plinker and if you look after it, it

Best idea is to tell us your budget. HW do some nice springers, especially if you get a secondhand one with all the problems sorted out, just ask Pianoman!

Hi guys and gals,   Looking for some advice as above.   Thinking about getting an air rifle for mooching about on permission, powerful enough for shooting rats and rabbits. Not looking to spend ma

I rate the Lighting as cheap but effective rifle...

Killed plenty of gear with them..

Lightning cheap? Not so, more expensive than the HW99 and only about £30 cheaper than the far superior HW95!

The Rekord trigger makes the Lighting one feel agricultural at best and downright crude at worst! The Lightning is the BSA springer equivalent of a Mark 1 R10!

I am saying cheap in the second hand market..

Most around the £150 mark.. HW hold more value hence the superior product.

The HW are betters tools but the BSA does the job . They are not the worst thing out there, when on a budget..

Lighting is light, short barrelled and pretty accurate and consistent..

1) Lightnings are known to have plenty of problems with the pivot pin.

2) Lightnings are known to shear stock bolts.

3) More than 1 report of a Lightning failing to group with anything and going back to be fixed.

If buying secondhand you could wind up with a right problem. The HW99s major gripe over recent years was the galling issue which appears to have been fixed by either HW or HC. If you spend the original budget on a gun what makes more sense?

£150 BSA Lightning which is one of the most complained about BSA rifles currently on the market and no warranty?

£220 HW99, a rifle which had a problem which has been cured and comes with a warranty so if it does go wrong, you have some come back. Oh and it has a Rekord trigger too?

I was on Guntrader website last night having a look, I've looked on there before when I've been looking at shotguns to get an idea of what they are making. Think I'm going to save a bit more, maybe £350.00 mark give me a bit more choice.

Thanks for replies guys :)

Aye it was a HW95 that I was looking at last night. I'll prob go through a shop and get rifle and scope together, get me started. I'm still looking through the ones suggested on here though. Glad I asked though as its given me a starting point :)

Prob won't be my last question though lol ;)

Cheers guys

Have you ever owned a BSA lighting ??

I can only go off my own personal experience mate...

I have had two lightings one brand new and the other 2nd hand. I had no issues with either.

You could scour forums and review pages and find negative comments about lots of rifles..

You get what you pay for.. If funds are limited a BSA is miles better than SMK , Gamo or Chinese stuff..

There are better rifles but to keep in budget its a option :victory:

Oh no it is not sire, oh very definately not. Remember a lot of BSA springers on the market are actually Gamo's wearing BSA nameplates (such as the Polaris). Many Lightnings on the secondhand market are Spanish built Gamo ones!

So you aint owned one..

Have you read these statistics you are quoting the BBS forum :whistling::whistling:

"More than one failing to group" Take it, it was two then :laugh:

From personal and first had experience its not a bad rifle.

Just a personal opinion here as all rifles and barrels will be different, i remember the first lightning i had years ago and it was a nice little gun. I was only plinking so never really saw its true potential. The last one i purchased just before xmas 2013 and for me its the most pellet fussy and inconsistant rifle ive owned. The power was up and down and no 2 pellets out of the same tin hit the same mark. I used to be a big bsa spring rifle fan but alas no more after spending 6 months giving it the benefit of the doubt and trying almost every pellet in circulation. Like i said thats just my experience with them and after owning a tx, again just my opinion, there is no comparison. I feel that i have got twice the rifle for not a lot more money.

Lol my question appears to have caused a light hearted forum brawl, I'm getting plenty setups/info so all good for me :)

Alas I have to get my wee van through its MOT before I can turn my sticky little paws to air rifle shopping but gives me time to do some research :)

Cheers guys

I agree with mole. the 99s is probably one of the most under rated springers on the market. I had 1 for 7-8 years and it never missed a beat. you could more than likely pick one up with a scope for 200 secondhand.

I own one of the old lightnings had it about 17 years , it's ok not brilliant , I have shot one of the new se ones and there f###ing shite the recoil is unacceptable they smash stock bolts and scopes there not fit for purpose , just my opinion

ignore all advice about the bsa and get yourself a hw you won't regret it
