fox digger 1,086
alright lads, things havent been so rosy with the bitch and pups, been the worst experience ive ever had with a bitch having pups. i wanted to wait and see what made it and what didnt before i posted on here about it, a few lads know the full story from pms from when she started to have them untill now. im not going to do a step by step account of how and what happened but basically she had 5 pups last thursday, given oxytocin after the first pup to help her have them nice and quick as we all knew she had a belly full of them plus the fact that she is 10 years old i wanted to make it as easy as possible on her. skipping forward there was no more pups comming and panic was setting in. a call to the the vet stated that all was ok that it isnt uncommon for a delay in delivery and give another shot of oxytocin to speed up the next lot of pups comming..... they didnt come and her pups were weak as she wasnt producing milk so bitch and pups to the vets. 9 remaining pups were taken from the bitch, one massive dog pup had blocked her up and caused complications for rest and blocked her solid. sadly the 9 hadnt survived from trying to be pushed out a dead end..... the vet said contractions had stopped as she was burned out, as a result she had stopped producing milk.... all 5 had to be bottle fed, two refused point blank to feed from the bottle, vet tried in vein and said it was unlikely they would make it. the bitch was f**ked, drugged to the eyeballs and we thought she wasnt going to make it, he said only for she was in such good condition and healthy for 10years old she would be gone by now ....could it get any worse..... we are now 8 days later, bottle feeding every hour up untill yest but thankfully the bitch has made a full recovery and has started to produce milk now after giving her lamblac everyday since she pupped. the two week pups faded away in the first two days so the result is 3 very healthy bitch pups and an old bitch that pulled through, (only 3 of her teeths are working!!) snoop, roybo, and a couple more have known from the start how things were going but i asked them to say fek all untill we were out of the shit and i knew what was what. Would i go through it again with an old bitch......NOT A HOPE...... am i happy with the way it all ended up..... yes and no, yes because the two of us that planned the mating because we wanted pups for ourselves got what we aimed for, and no because of what i put the bitch through and nearly ended her days and fell out with the vet over it all!! bird 9,897
bloody hell mate what a tough time for you+family and the old bitch, but the main thing is the bitch is still ok .Maybe breeding a bitch at a older age is not always the best thing to do,? say maybe around 6-8 years old as maybe after that there body change (inside) it could be like women, as the older a woman is its harder+ complications . But suppose the vet would have said all this at 1st ,and you prob had the all clear then. But you got 3 pups, and if the pups turn out ok for what you want in the field , you got a breed line for the future 1 Quote Link to post

alex1987 164
Blimey sounds like a rough time. Goes to show just how wrong the antis are who think we are all barbaric and treat our dogs poorly. Glad things are looking a bit rosier for bitch and remaining pups. No doubt these pups will be cherished all the more having been through all that for them. Atb with them for the future 2 Quote Link to post
fox digger 1,086
cheers bird, its a strange one, she is in very good shape for her age and her system must be in good nick to drop 14 eggs and hold them, if there bodies wernt able to cope or was poorly they wouldnt produce that many apparently...... just a bloody pity she had problems with the one big pup, other than that the result may have been brighter who knows..... either way alls well that ends well, 1 Quote Link to post

I know norm its only bull type breeds that they have that done waiting in the wings to do. I bred bull breeds and our bitch bullmastiff was ok , but vet would have done that if needed. But lurchers are norm a lot healthier type dogs , so they don't think it needs doing , just a thought for any other lads that breed lurchers and things might not be going right at the time Quote Link to post

But lurchers are norm a lot healthier type dogs , so they don't think it needs doing , just a thought for any other lads that breed lurchers and things might not be going right at the time i had her penciled in to pup on a tuesday, she didnt have them untill the thursday. tuesday night we rang the vet to say she was ready to burst, i dunno if you saw the pic on the other thread but she could barley walk, asked the vet about a section on the bitch and asked if if would be a good idea with her age and amount of pups that it would be easier on her....... the reply was was that she might not have taken from the first day she was mated so ( she was mated 3 times over a week) leave her for a few days more and see what happens, if we have to do one we will but the mortality rate after sections is higher than natural births and she is fit and healthy so she should be fine on her own....... how wrong they were!!!!! she wouldnt have been able to rear 14 anyway and i wouldnt have left 14 under her but its a sad turn of events that it happen the way it did, as is ever we live and we learn, and the ones that are left will be worth the trouble im sure!
