.22Lr Barrel Threading

Recommended Posts

Choking a rifle barrel may not make that much difference in your average rimfire hunting terms. But also the rifles you had shortened may not have been choked in the first place.

Just a niggling thought that would put me off.

i just jump in me, very compulsive character i have :laugh:

First thing I'd say here is the OP didn't ask about shortening the barrel, only screwcutting which would have no effect on any choke that may or may not be there.

If you ARE thinking about getting it shortened, there's 2 sides to this issue: Bornhunter is a boffin and knows about technical stuff like that....BUT..has only had his FAC 5 minutes, whereas Paulus has had guns since before BH was born, but doesn't know much about anything.

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to get one chopped if it suited me better like that.

 I'm not saying Paulus is wrong. LOL. Just that some rifles are choked and what effect will that have on accuracy if shortened? And you don't need an FAC to own a choked rifle. LOL

Only joshing with you mate. Some people don't even believe you can choke a forged barrel, but if you can, it is so miniscule as to make no difference. You need an FAC to own a choked rimfire.

This is a very interesting conversation, but completely off topic.

Back to the OT, is it possible to get a barrel threaded to accept a moderator.

Please note, I am not interested in the choke as I shoot my groupings are not that of a 5p piece, they are more like a...£5 note....or a book of the history of the £5 note, written on A1 size sheets of paper. Which explains my requirement for a moderator.

So, is it possible to get a barrel threaded?

Oh..is that what you asked 2 pages ago? Yes, it is possible to get a barrel screwcut. Won't affect your groupings though. Prices vary from region to region so ask a few gunshops. I've heard prices range from £45 to over £100.

The .22 RF has run out of steam at 16", after that it starts to slow down again!

I had my Sako Finnfire Varmint cut down from 22" to 16" and re-threaded via Martin Elworthy's gun shop in St Austell.

Very neat job, still a tack driver, no problem.
