srspower 20
I am hoping to go wildfowling soon so we thought we would do some testing of steel shot. We were quite impressed with the results. Enjoy Quote Link to post

charlie caller 3,654
Ok decent test guys, but just to correct you on a couple of points, you do not have to use steel, there are a number of none toxic alternatives available, ie tungsten matrix (excellent) heavy shot (excellent) bismouth (shocking) and one or two others on the market, so perhaps a test involving some of the above would be useful in future? Also you can still use lead to shoot wildfowl in Scotland, providing you are not shooting over the foreshore or wetland, I have no problem whatsoever obtaining number 3 lead, as I use them in conjunction with the rifle to shoot foxes, and in fact picked a couple of boxes up last week, finally guns that are not steel proved with the fleur-de-leys mark are fine shooting ordinary steel (not high performance steel) through less than half choke barrels, if you wish to use high performance stuff then your gun MUST bear the mark, as the pressures involved are far greater than lead, steel is good provided it is driven fast, and some of the new loads, Eley lightning steel to name one are driving the shot at well over 1600fps, at those speeds, steel will kill just as well as lead, and out to pretty much the same ranges, I would love to see you test some heavy shot, as it is heavier than lead, and I have killed duck at some pretty long ranges, stone dead in the air, and when plucked, the entry and exit wound look like they have been shot with a rimfire.
