stop.end 4,079
STOP END,i thought this whole thread was pre ban,and everyone has tha own opinion,in the days we were allowed to garry out this glourious pastime how many lads haven't said, let the pup have a look? none by the replies,, but I have and everytime we were out tha was always something needing a look or do all the superstar line bred terriers do it naturally, some people pass tha driving test 1st time, are 2nd,3rd 4th timers worse drivers, everyone is different that's what makes these debates intresting, but don't slag each other,,ill do it to defend myself,,as always but never start a slagging match.. HMMM... big difference in human beings doing their driving test and a terrier self entering!!! human beings have been spoilt by opinions, society, money and everything else that wrecks what we have grown to love but take for granted........just look at this ridiculous topic! the terrier knows none of this and as far as he is concerned he has been born to be bold and rebellious but with a cautious hand, be inquisitive yet sensible and go underground and flush... or stay to dug to with vermin, because un be nonce to the terrier if bred right thats what his whole DNA will be built up of .....going into dark places and persuade the culprit that its time to vacate! its not rocket science but a fine art if you get it right!..... and like a picasso can not be bought!....... but shared to the right people to observe and learn, and study for the purpose and purpose only of preserving a fine art...... peoples opinions of terriers should be this terriers should be that, or work a certain way is IMO excuses ....a terrier can only be called a terrier when he does what he has been bred to do for hundreds of years ... and that is work quarry till job is done. and look to go hunting the next morning..... 2 Quote Link to post
tallyboy 32
What about abpt? If they have a good time, they can't go tomorrow and I know, and 7/8 of my terriers certainly couldn't hunt the next day, they aren't bred for that, they are bred for work, vermin control ie lambing calls to preserve livestock and gamebirds, mine couldn't do day after day sorry, but I suppose that makes them bad terriers,i Quote Link to post
tallyboy 32
and what im trying to say is don't everything deserve a 2nd chance?? a good long ear gets away in my eyes and there not my game,,if we caught everything we hunted im sure we would get bored, fish in a barrel,my next earth may be my worst or the best, but I wont hang up my shovel because of it,, and heres one for you it took nigel Mansell 3 times to pass his test,,and the terriers get one,id like to know what age yours and foxdroppers dogs start to work,,be careful answering this, yous either have kennel fulls or don't do much hunting,i forgot you only breed when needed, give the rest away,aND NEVER PICK A BAD PUP,BECAUSE FULL LITTER PUUUURFECT 1 Quote Link to post

dytkos 17,783
As to the initial post by the lad, you can never be 100% guaranteed thet theres nothing at home if the terrier is not allowed to run the earth. Even then some dogs are better finders than others, some can't find when one has been run in, conversly, following several hunts over several decades I've seen hounds run over earths and then seen a terrrier entered and had a result. I'm not an "expert" like some on here, a hunt terrier man or a pest controller but I have seen foxing dogs of all descriptions work for over 40 years. JMHO before I get shot down LOL Cheers, D. 1 Quote Link to post
rossthedog 76
Learn to trust your terrier if you can't trust it get rid and try again, don't know anything about hounds but I would use the same rule as thumb with them. Quote Link to post

It's that "scent" thing, some foxes don't give off much, especially vixens with cubs, think it's part of their self preservation mechanism. A sweaty fox thats been run by hounds obviously would but like I said, you can't 100% guarantee it. Maybe most of the time but not 100% Cheers, D. 1 Quote Link to post
jeemes 4,445
Hi all, I got myself a seleham russle terrier hoping to dig foxes with him this coming winter, he is 10 months old at the moment and has killed a fox in a stop end already, i was walking him around some disused earths today, he stook his nose in the mouth of the earth and smelled inside and walked away ? Should he of travelled the earth or will the terrier only go in if there is a fox inside the earth ?Hope you are getting all this down.... Thought you were out my stern was up so went back in..
