Squirrel_Basher 17,100 Posted May 7, 2014 Report Share Posted May 7, 2014 The reason i, like many others use the rifle is because a terrier is not the be all and end all to fox control .I work for many estates /farmers that require control not a jolly on a quad. I snare as part of my income ,i lamp,i dig .This is called control mate .Ive been around hounds all my life ,some good times some not so but only natural for a lad keen on fox control .I fully understand if you think terrier work is everything,fine but not realistic when results are required . Your will no doubt make a big deal of it but thats your prob not mine. In Wilts we have plenty to go at despite the pressure but locally control is paramount. If you wish to expose me as a terrier men that shoots them too then fair play nothing to hide here . 1 Quote Link to post

Some of the replies i have read on here makes me wonder how men are actually conducting their business and why terrier work is under the micro scope. and i see a few regular posters on here admitting to illegal activities....hole ending, the baiting of an animal!! never has and never will have anything to do with terrierwork! ruins more terriers than enough and what is the point.... get him a few nips?..... ego? look at my dog take a bite but wont travel in the dark, find and box clever and do what he has been bred over 150 years to do! these kind of folk that start terriers like this have no place in terrier work. I also see more than a few posting from a hunt service stance...as in out working with hounds... IMO there a very big difference in a man who works terriers for a hunt as in a hunt terrier man...and the man who digs to terriers because its his passion not his job... the man with a hound pack needs a certain tool too to what he needs to do to keep his job and status.....the man who digs for passion needs a dog that will stay and find and do the job to a certain degree of ease, ..... a young terrier worth its salt, ( bred right & reared right) will self enter. find and stay till dug too IF entered and socialised correctly by a man who knows what he is doing and how to do it properly! Terrier work is a very humane and effective method for vermin control and when done properly by folk who know what there doing is with out doubt the most ancient art of field craft that many have only read about judging by some of the replies on here! 5 Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,445 Posted May 7, 2014 Report Share Posted May 7, 2014 Hi all, I got myself a seleham russle terrier hoping to dig foxes with him this coming winter, he is 10 months old at the moment and has killed a fox in a stop end already, i was walking him around some disused earths today, he stook his nose in the mouth of the earth and smelled inside and walked away ? Should he of travelled the earth or will the terrier only go in if there is a fox inside the earth ? Hope you are getting all this down... 2 Quote Link to post
