First Time Out With My New Rifle...

Recommended Posts

Well guys and gals,

The day has finally come and gone...I've been eagerly awaiting today for about 5-6 days now..and it was worth the wait.

I took the gun down my local field yesterday to get comfortable with the aim points at different distances with the new rifle before attempting to target any quarry...all went well and I even bagged a bunnie or two :)

I packed up and headed home with a spring in my step knowing it would be a few hours and I would be laid out prone picking rabbits off at left right and center..well that's what I was hoping for anyway...

Now, tbh I would have liked to be at the permission for dawn but me and my shooting partner both have young kids and responsibilities and such so we couldn't..

Didn't matter though, we pulled into the driveway about 11:35am and was greeted by the sight of what must have been 20-30 rabbits graising on the front lawns. I instantly stopped the van and my partner jumped out swung open the side door and reached for his hw35, he left his door open and rested the rifle on it...he got settled in on a rabbit I wasn't sure which one he was aiming at at the time as there where still 20 odd out in front of us...

A few seconds past and there was a crack followed by a thud...I now new which rabbit he was aimed at as every other one darted for cover but one didn't...it had just rolled over. Wig set off to get his rabbit and came walking back with his rabbit in hand and a smile on his face...he jumped back in and we head of down the driveway towards the farmhouse...

After a drive that seemed to take forever, we finally pulled up to the house. We both jumped out and donned our cammo. We took our hw35's and our pcp's. After seeing so many rabbits on the way in we decided we would be best off with the pcp's so we got them both set up and we where off..he went one way and I went the other..the lands about 6 acres and it's riddled with rabbit so we both new where ever we sat we'd be seeing some action...

Well I went back down to one of the fields that run along side the driveway, I thought I'd get in and get settled before they got brave and ventured out again...

I decided on this spot, I was using the tree in front of me as cover whilst shooting all along the hedge line. The big oak in front was 45yrds away from me so most rabbits that come out are well within range.

I laid here for a while getting a few lovely shots off...one that pops to mind was a rabbit at about 70-80 yards away right up to the right..I thought id hit a tree behind it at about 110 yards to try spook it towards me...

Well as I let the shot off it spooked a rabbit that I'd not seen sitting under the oak...he stood up to see what the fuss was about but in doing so presented me with a perfect shot... I gently squeezed the trigger and he just rolled over!! I was very happy with it...more because he'd stitched him self up, if he'd not been so nosey he'd still be out there digging holes :D

Well after a while I had decided it was time to move on, I got up slowly to see if there was any I'd not seen whilst laying down but there wasn't anything within range so I went and collected my rabbits and moved on to another little spot I like to shoot from..

This spot is like a little rabbit heaven! At the bottom of the field is a large ditch that's like a c shape around the bottom of the field and the rabbits have turned it into a huge warren.

I sat at one end of the ditch and look across the field to the other end of the c shape..so all the rabbits from this warren are to my right... I had a few straight off from here, a lot of them where small though and ideally id like to leave them but the land owner want ALL of them gone as there trashing his land!

And if I don't shoot them he'll get someone else that will.

Again I had a few cracking shots from here, I rolled a rabbit over at 56 yards without even a twitch..which I was extremely happy about as I'd been worrying about the fact I was using a .177 as a posed to my usual .22... I won't worry anymore I'm extremely happy with this rifle and won't be selling this one anytime soon :)

The day went on pretty much the same as that from 11:30 until we decided to leave at around 7:30...I would have loved to have stayed and shot into the evening but had to get home to help with the kids :)

We had a pretty productive day though I totalled 23 rabbits and my partner got 24!!

My two rows are the ones on the right, in front of my new hw100kt .177 which I love by the way lol..

My cousins gun is a BSA R-10 mk2 .22 jb'd and tench reg'd.

Both are fantastic:)

Well I'm home now and going to chill out and read some more stuff on here...

Take it easy folks,

good luck

Gents, what can I say, mighty fine shooting and a pretty pleased landowner I bet, You've shot the equivalent of two horses with the amount they eat. Not only are you helping the landowner you could be saving the vegetarians as well

I'm beginning to like the sound of these HW100's thinking I might have to go and test one of these out. :hmm:

Cheers lads :) it's good to be back ;)

It's been far to long!

The land owner was extremely happy and as luck would have it the neighbour was out and saw the haul we'd shot, she asked us to go on her property and have a mooch about as she said there's 'More rabbits them ever'

We had a wonder round her meadows but there wasn't as many as my first permission so we headed back across, telling the neighbour we'd be shooting early mornings and evenings on her land as it seemed quiet in the day...she preferred this as her live stock would all be away when we're there then aswell:)

I did one shoot with my nite site on this perm before I had to sell all my gear and I have to say it was a sea of bunnies so I'm trying to source a new one home made or a brought one second hand preferably..I want to get night shooting again.

The rabbits are confident on the land though, so for the next few shoots I'll be happy to shoot them in the day as there's so many.

But the larger bunnies are smart and only come out under the cover of darkness..so I'll need to add something to my arsenal for when that happens...

Also not this coming Saturday but the following one, I'm going back and will be willing to take someone along. as long as they're a responsible shooter...insurance is a must.

And must be able to meet me around Colchester.:)

Wow, how long did that lot take to gut and clean???

................................................

The small ones get chucked in the freezer as they are mate...

My mates got a couple of boa constrictors that are partial to a rabbit or two :)

Most of them were small so I think it was only 12-14 we gutted and kept for our selves. So not as long as you was expecting probably :) lol

Cheers mate:) I was well happy with the result! Going to that perm again in 2 weeks and I'm trying my best to sort either a nitesite or a nite eye so I can record some action...I've still got all my old daytime recording equipment so I'll sort some videos out soon to :)

Thanks again pal.
