Rock Pipit was my gut feeling, it was the striped head that swayed me towards a Meadow Pipit. As to the back toe I do not know, but the Rock Pipet is larger than the Meadow Pipit.

The Rock Pipet is tied to the coast and is very rarely seen inland whereas the Meadow Pipit can be seen inland as well as the coast.

Bloody double quotes.

I saw two birds being shown as a pair of meadow pipits and it was in fact one of each and a old hand pointed it out to other folk, cracking birds which ever ones they are and nice one for the bit of info on habitat.

Just done a search as I was doubting my memory. It looks as if I was right to doubt. I would now say it is Tree Pipit. It is them that have the smaller claw.

Thanks for the info. I took the photo on a common just off the M25/A3 in Surrey open heath and some woods. Did not hear anything from it as just a grab shot, it was perched on the stump about 15 away when we walked past.

Will keep my eyes open for another
