Strong Stuff 2,171
Any suggestions for treating nettle stings on a dog please? This dog seems to be quite sensitive to them, have had dogs in the past that have been stung and do the dancing around thing for a bit, but this dog becomes a pain in the arse for the rest of the day! He'll be lying quietly one minute then racing around the house trying to scratch and bite where it is itching. Obvious thing would be to avoid them, but they are everywhere here this year. Have given him Piriton (generic) in the past, but if he's going to get stung every day then I don't want to be giving him tablets every day really ... Or can I? I was worried that it might be a problem to have him dosed up all the time? I know humans can use it everyday, but dogs? I was hoping someone might have a more natural remedy or prevention, I've had a mooch on the net but can't find much advice except to give anti histamines, so if that's the answer then I'll have to do that. Thanks.
Bosun11 537
Doc Leaf.... Or a massive injection of 'dog the feck up'!! Seriously, I've never heard of anything, nor done anything, some dogs, because of their coat, will be more susceptible than others. Do what I do, just give it a look of 'you daft tw@t' and leave it to twitch, its gone in an hour or two.

Chid 6,583
Piriton or other anti histamine tablets
mushroom 13,198
If the dose for a human is say one tablet you can double it up as antihistamine is not as effective on dogs

That's the point mate, it seems to bother him most of the day, and it annoys the feck out of me with him bouncing around at random Will stick with the Piriton for the minute then (thanks for replies above) and get some Aloe Vera stuff. I think because of his fur a dock leaf wouldn't work so well.
Tiercel 6,986
If any of the kids get stung by nettles I always put pile cream (Xyloproct) on the sting as it contains a local anaesthetic and stops the itching almost immediately. TC
