Starting My Collie X Whippet On Rabbits.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a 2 yr old collie x whippet dog and I'm having trouble getting him to pick up rabbits. He's well into the chase, getting right up onto them, but he's just not picking them up.

Anybody have any tips? Would getting a skin and doing some retrieving with it help?

I had this with a dog before, slipped her on about 100 rabbits, got right up on all of them but just wouldn't strike. Pet homed in the end

I had same problem didn't seem to have a natural strike but I just kept slipping him it was very frustrating but got there in the end, u might find once it's picked its first rabbit it will have a natural retrieve just don't give up too easily mate

My 2nd gen collie/grey was the same, she could catch rabbits no problem, but wouldn't pick them up

One day she marked a rabbit and put it up

It took her up the side of a river with was all pebbles

Moral of the story

She hurt herself catching it but she picked it up and killed it

Since then she's never looked back and now she has a real good strike

Keep at it
